FRAMING

Local Links Down Under

On Sunday 29th January a significant event took

place in Lyndhurst with the unveiling of a blue

plaque to Captain (later Admiral) Arthur Phillip by

historian Dan Snow, Captain Shane Craig of the

Australian Naval Attaché, and Philip Dinn of the

Rotary Club of New Forest on the wall at Vernalls,

Goose Green. Also unveiled was a memorial oak

bench, celebrating Phillip and the New Forest’s

connections with Australia, with 17th century bricks

from Phillip’s former home at Vernalls, donated by

the Norris family, incorporated in the design.

These events marked the completion of a three-

year project, initiated by

Phillip, enthusiast Bev

Major and promoted

jointly by Lyndhurst

Parish Council and New

Forest Centre, to raise

awareness of Phillip’s

New Forest links.

Arthur Phillip had

commanded the First

Fleet which settled in

Sydney Cove, became

the first governor of

New South Wales and

laid the foundations
