We can also collect your own grab bags 15 Marsh Parade, Hythe 023 8084 4741 FRAME SHOP HYTHE PICTURE FRAMING Marjorie Celebrates Centenary Marjorie Matthews was born in Zomba, now called Malawi, on 11th February 1919, where her Father was the Postmaster. So last month a big party was held at the Hythe and District Club to celebrate her 100th Birthday. In 1932 her father died in a motorbike accident, so her mother, Marjorie and her two sisters, moved to South Africa, to join the family living in Durban. At Marjorie Matthews enjoying her celebrations 21 Marjorie who was by then known to all as Peche, signed up for army service and later married Lt.Colonel Frank Elliott. They were transferred to El Obeid, British headquarters for the Shamal Kordufan area in the Sudan. In the last months of the war Frank was transferred to Europe, and Marjorie joined his parents in London. After four children and seven years of post war poverty and icy cold weather, in bombed out England, Marjorie took her four children, without husband, back to a distinctly warmer, sunny South Africa, and the support of her loving family. As an artist in the advertising business, Marjorie held down a day job and another advertising job in the evenings, and raised Continued on page 3
