Looking a er your mental health is more important than ever, urges Hampshire County Council as many of our lives change beyond recognition during the coronavirus pandemic. Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Public Health, Councillor Judith Grajewski, said, “Disruption to schooling, social isolation, changes to employment and being in lockdown have created a unique set of challenges for our mental health. People of all ages are experiencing stress and anxiety, so looking after your mental health and wellbeing is paramount. As a first step, take a look at Every Mind Matters (EMM) which is backed by the NHS and gives expert advice for coping during the current crisis.” Whilst at home you may feel bored, frustrated or lonely as well as being concerned about nances, health or those close to you. However, there are some simple things you can do now to help you keep on top of your mental wellbeing including: • staying in touch with family, friends and work colleagues; • keeping active by exercising regularly; • spending time doing things you enjoy such as reading, cooking, playing games or learning something new; • eating healthily and drinking plenty of water. e EMM webpages also include an easy to follow guide for those who are feeling worried or anxious about coronavirus. is includes tips to help you manage these feelings and links to practical resources and useful helplines, as well as details on how to access urgent support if required. Frontline workers whose health and mental health are under particular pressure during the coronavirus crisis can also get help from a new mental health charity, Mental Health at Work, which is o ering round the clock support. e charity is a partnership between Shout, Samaritans, Mind, Hospice UK and e Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. NHS workers, carers, the Blue Light emergency services and key workers can call or text a trained volunteer and nd resources, tips and ideas to help them look a er their wellbeing. Taking care of your health and wellbeing at home has become more important than ever, says Hampshire County Council, as it issues advice to help older residents stay well physically and mentally during the Covid-19 crisis and beyond. Councillor Judith Grajewski, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Public Health, said, “Whilst you should not hesitate to seek help when needed, there are lots of simple things you can do at home to lessen your risk of having to see the GP or go to hospital. For example, falls and fractures are a common and serious health issue faced by older people and can lead to hospitalisation, so it makes sense to see what you can do to reduce your risk of falls, while eating a balanced diet and keeping well hydrated are important for maintaining general good health. Keeping preventable problems from becoming more serious is key.” e advice for keeping well at home covers a range of topics including staying active every day, maintaining strength and balance, keeping the home safe to avoid falls, looking a er your mental health and wellbeing, taking medication correctly and staying hydrated. It features tips and guidance from the NHS and other trusted organisations to help older people maximise their chances of staying in good health in lockdown. Connect to Support Hampshire, the county’s one- stop shop online directory of care and support, also has useful information and services for adults in Hampshire who want to stay independent, manage their own care and connect with their community.
