As I write this letter, we remain in the social restrictions that we have now endured since the middle of March and once more you have an online edition of the Herald and well done to the team for getting this published for us. As I write it is encouraging to see the number of people dying each week starting to consistently decrease and to know that there is capacity in our local hospitals. It is however, truly shocking to see how many so called ‘excess’ deaths there have been over the last month or two and these are all people, with lives and families they leave behind. We need to do all we can to limit further suffering and death and this includes being very careful in what we do once some aspects of life become less restrictive. As well as seeking to stay safe and healthy and to try to restrict the spread of this virus most of us will have thought about how this situation is actually changing us and the wider community and society. We continue to be thankful those who are helping others in running errands, chatting and supporting, working in frontline health and care services and those who continue to work in providing us with other vital services to keep things going. In my daily message and podcast to members and friends of our church congregation (check our website if you want to listen to them and also details of our Sunday streamed worship) we have been applying the nine ‘fruit of the Spirit’ found in Galatians 5 to our thoughts and prayers for people. These difficult days test us to the limit of our resilience and there are many in our community for whom every day is a major battle. As followers of Jesus Christ move into the season of Pentecost, we remain convinced that God is present amongst by the Holy Spirit despite often feeling fatigued through all this and feeling like all we can do is cry out and lament. So please Lord, may we see your Spirit at work in the world and in our community here on the Waterside at this time. Amen So here are the nine fruit of the Spirit, and I have seen these at work in these days and I hope that you will experience them for yourself in the days ahead; “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self- control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV UK) With love and best wishes to you all Eddie Boon, Minister, Cornerstone Church, Hythe DEAR HERALD READERS SAVE WATER AND HELP PROTECT THE PLANET – WATERSAFE’S TOP TIPS WaterSafe encouraged households in Hampshire to save water and help protect the environment as it partners with Waterwise during the sixth annual Water Saving Week which took place in May. Using less water means saving energy, as less power is needed to pump water from underground, rivers and reservoirs, treat it to high quality standards and pump it to taps in homes and businesses. Using less hot water also saves on energy to heat it. According to the Energy Saving Trust, heating water for use in homes makes up about 4% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions. And by using less energy, we produce less of the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to greenhouse gases and result in climate change. Julie Spinks, director of WaterSafe said: “While it’s important everyone uses the water they need to stay safe right now, we’re encouraging everyone to look at other ways they can do their bit this Water Saving Week. You’ll not only help protect the environment – you’ll save money off your energy bills and your water bills too if you have a water meter. The approved plumbers on WaterSafe’s register are promoted by water companies and are all trained in the water regulations which include avoiding water waste. We’re already an army of water savers supporting water-saving and promoting water quality in the UK’s homes and businesses every day. Which is why we’re delighted to be working in partnership with Waterwise to help spread the word that small changes can make a big difference.” While it’s important everyone uses the water they need for washing at this time, particularly hands and clothes, there are water-saving measures that everyone can safely do at home to make a di erence, including: • Shorten your shower – it should ideally be around four minutes long. • Wash your dishes in a bowl instead of under a running tap to reduce water wastage by 50%. • Research water and energy-e cient appliances – compare bathroom products such as shower-heads and taps by using the Uni ed Water Label. • Swap your garden hose for a watering can – hosepipes typically use about 1,000 litres an hour, that’s more than 12 baths. Waterwise’s Managing Director, Nicci Russell, said: “Waterwise is delighted to be working with WaterSafe on Water Saving Week for the fifth year running! WaterSafe’s accredited plumbers are so important in ensuring we have enough water to go round. We’ve already seen recent water shortages in areas of the UK traditionally thought of as really wet – and with our minds focused on staying safe from Covid-19 currently we are reminded again of the value of water to life. We all have a part to play in the Climate Emergency: Water Saving Week will focus on connecting this with the importance of using water wisely – as well as how. Thank you WaterSafe plumbers for being part of the team!” For more on water e ciency and to nd an approved plumber visit watersafe.org.uk Music at Beaulieu is following the guidelines in respect of Coronavirus. e concerts in June, July and August are now cancelled and those who have purchased tickets will be given refunds.
