She completed a 30 day ‘marathon’ to raise funds for Help for Heroes, walking the corridor of her apartment block, 70 metres, 6 times a day for 1 month using her Zimmer frame. is is even though, for the past 15 years she has su ered from Parkinson’s disease, has had a hip replacement (while awake), and also a stroke and diabetes. In the last few months she has also fallen twice and broken her hip and humerus bone, so she finds walking a great challenge. e idea of the challenge followed a chat with her granddaughter, Alex Barnes, who had noticed that her grandma was Tom Moore’s charity walk. e idea of ‘Lily’s Marathon’ took o and she is now astounding her neighbours with her e orts as they keep their doors open to cheer her on as she goes past. Fundraising for Help for Heroes is what spurred Lily into action as she comes from a military family. Her beloved husband, Joe, who sadly le her widowed at the age of 47, served in the Armed Forces in World War 2, as did her six brothers. Her father and uncles also served during the First World War. Lily herself worked in the East End of London making parts for the Hosier Glider Planes and webbing, parachutes and uniforms for the Military, alongside thousands of men and women for the war e ort. Lily said: “If it’s the last thing I do, I would love to do something good for my country and the boys and getting depressed as a result of her injuries and illnesses which were making it hard for her to get up and out. Lily is ercely independent and lives on her own. Alex therefore suggested that Lily needed a purpose and came up with the idea of a walking fundraiser for Help for Heroes, having been inspired by Captain girls in the Armed Forces.” Lily’s granddaughter, Alex, commented: “I’m so proud of what my wonderful Nana is doing to both support our veterans and to overcome her own walking challenges. She never gives up and is an inspiration to us all.” David Martin, Head of Supporter Fundraising at Help for Heroes, added: “Like Lily, many of our wounded veterans who have experienced trauma often stop going out and start isolating as they feel very low. It’s amazing that she is doing this challenge having gone through so much over the past few years – and we are incredibly grateful that she’s doing this to help us give our veterans the support they need to live their lives to the full. Thank you, Lily!” 97 year old Lily from Lee on Solent Age Concern – New Forest Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic Age Concern New Forest have sadly had to close their Charity Shops and stop all their Footcare Clinics, Lunch clubs and Computer at Home Service until further notice.
