ORGANIST NEEDED Trinity Church Service e church St Mary the Virgin in Eling is the 10th oldest church in England, the mother church of Totton, and a place where generations have been married, baptised, and laid to rest. Now, in the 21st century we face the challenge of responding to the great environmental crises that are upon us, climate change, pollution, extinction of wildlife and now, pandemic disease. We are doing this by going deep green and by opening our doors to the community of Totton and Eling. Local award winning architects Snug are designing an accessible, zero carbon church building with modern audio visual systems so that the church can be used for community activities safely and to its greatest capacity. We are wilding the extensive church grounds as a home for the natural world and as resource for play and learning for people of all ages. We need to raise around £360,000 to achieve this, no small task! We are working with Eling Infants School, the Eling Tide Mill, the Eco Eling resident’s environmental group and the support of our local councillors, David Harrison and Caroline Rackham. I am church warden and Eco Church champion at St Mary’s and this project means so much to me that I am going to walk 200 miles to raise funds for it. At 72 years old this will be quite a challenge, but with a stout stick made by Richard the toll keeper at the Tide Mill, and the support of family, friends and community, I will do it, and the more money I raise the easier it will be. I shall start fromWhitstable on the north Kent coast on the 15th November. I will set out with a pilgrimage to Canterbury along the quaintly named Crab & Winkle Way - 14 miles there and back. I shall then travel along the Saxon Shore Way to Rochester, calling on my birthplace, Gillingham (8th August 1948). Rochester is home to my second cathedral. From there it is the North Downs Way to Guildford Cathedral and on to Farnham where the route becomes the St Swithun’s Way. is is home territory and the next cathedral is Winchester, where I expect the streets to be lined with ag waving supporters. en it is onwards to Salisbury spire via the Clarendon Way. at’s it with cathedrals; the last bit of the walk will be along the Avon Valley Way to Downton and then over to Romsey for prayers in the Abbey, and there I will join the Test Way all the way to St Mary the Virgin Eling Hill. I hope to arrive on Advent Sunday 29th November 2020, exactly a year a er the launch of the Sanctuary Church project at St Mary’s.
