Est., Hythe 023 8084 0163 Low Sun, And The Return Of Icy Windscreens Advice from the AA Stay one step ahead of the seasonal switch in driving conditions Autumn’s not just about blackberries and ery leaves – it brings changes to the roads, too. Dazzle Glare when the sun’s low in the sky is more likely to be a problem at this time of year. To improve vision: • Clean your windscreen, inside and out, removing the hazy lm that builds up. • Sort out glass scratches and chips – they can intensify the sun’s glare. • Replace your wiper blades if they’re worn, damaged, or more than a couple of years old. • Use a screen wash additive that’s made for the job – check the handbook if you’re not sure where to top it up. • Keep a pair of sunglasses in the car, and use the sun visors. • Slow down if you’re dazzled. • Use headlights to help others see you. Remember: • If the sun’s behind you, it’s in the eyes of those coming towards you. • If the sun’s in your eyes it’s probably blinding drivers following you too. Batteries Batteries generally last around ve years. If there’s any sign that your battery’s struggling now, it’s likely to let you down during the winter, when it’s colder. Replace now to avoid hassle later on. Bulbs Check your lights every few weeks throughout the year, but especially as autumn starts and we head into the darker months. Your handbook shows how to change a bulb but you might need a garage to change headlight ones. Remember the brake lights and number plate lights. Tyres We recommend at least 3mm of tread for the winter so if yours is getting low, buy new tyres now before the cold sets in. Antifreeze • Antifreeze is important year round to prevent corrosion and improve summer cooling. • It should be checked as part of the regular service schedule. • ere are di erent types and mixing them could damage your engine. • Your handbook gives details of the correct antifreeze to use. • If in doubt get a garage to check the antifreeze for you — many o er cheap or even free winter checks. During the recent Organ Donation Week in September, NHS Blood and Transplant were urging people to talk to their families about organ donation to increase the number of people whose lives can be saved or transformed by an organ transplant. Last year, 79 people in Hampshire had their lives saved by a transplant. If more people agreed to donate, more lives would be saved. Currently, many more are still waiting for that life-saving call. On the 20th May this year, the law around organ donation in England changed to an ‘opt out’ system. is means that it will be considered that you would be willing to donate your organs, unless you have opted out, are in one of the excluded groups or have told your family you do not want to donate. It is important that people know that you still have a choice and family members will still be consulted before organ donation goes ahead. Families are more likely to support your organ donation decision, when they already know what you want to happen. Following the change in law, NHS Blood and Transplant is urging families across England to talk about their organ donation decision. Knowing what your relatives want, helps you support their decision at a di cult time. More and more families in Hampshire are saying yes to organ donation but there is still an urgent shortage of donors. NHS Blood and Transplant is asking people in Hampshire to tell their families they want to donate to help make sure more lives are saved. Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant said: “We need more people in Hampshire to talk about organ donation to increase the number of lifesaving transplants. “Even now the law has changed, families will still be approached before organ donation goes ahead. So it remains so important to talk to your families and make sure they know what you want to happen. “Register your organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell your family the choice you have made. If the time comes, we know families find the organ donation conversation with nurses or medical teams much easier if they already know what their relative wanted.” Find out more and register your decision by visiting NHS Organ Donor Register at www.organdonation.nhs . uk and share your decision with your family.
