Deciding to make the move to Homeborough House, a retirement development in Hythe a er living with her husband in Spain for 17 years, had de nitely been the right choice. Sadly she’d lost her husband Philip a er 55 wonderful years of marriage and she missed him very much. Feeling like the new girl on her rst day at school, Angela took the brave step to attend a birthday gathering for one of the residents. Within a few minutes, a lady sat next to her and said, “You’re new aren’t you? I only moved in a couple of weeks ago myself, it’s nice to meet you”. e lady’s name was Sheila, and Angela immediately felt reassured as she learned that she’d also recently lost her husband Doug who’d she’d been married to for 61 years. A er a cake and a cuppa, the two ladies were chatting like old friends! “Meeting someone who was at the same stage in life and had gone through similar events was reassuring and meant the world to me”, Angela explains. It soon became apparent that the two pals were destined to be great friends. Sheila who has lived in Hythe for 50 years, worked at Noadswood School as a Laboratory Assistant before she retired, took Angela, who was new to the area under her wing, as they shared shopping trips and put the world to rights whilst visiting local cafés and pubs in the area. Angela goes on to say: “I’d previously suffered a brain aneurysm and Sheila has osteoarthritis, so she helped me remember stuff, while I’d fetch things she needed. I often say to Sheila – you’ve got the brains and I’ve got the legs!” Sheila Quinn, 86 says : “It’s lovely to hear how much Angela feels I’ve helped her but she’s helped me no end too. She has become a very close friend of mine”. “She made me smile again” – left to right: Sheila & Angela of Homeborough House Send your local news to The Editor, The Herald, 2 High Street, Hythe SO45 6AH or email editor@herald-publishing.co.uk
