A social evening was held for members of Foresters Flower Club and about 20 ladies attended with big smiles, facemasks, and socially distanced chairs. e evening ew past, smiles abundant, and before we knew, it was 9 o’clock and we were wiping down chairs and packing away, with great anticipation for August’s meeting when Marion and Mo will be providing a demonstration for us! In the meantime we can prepare for our autumn arrangements. Poppies, alliums, nigella and aquilegia all make great textual additions to designs from September through autumn until the winter. Collect seed heads on a warm, dry day, avoiding residual moisture in the seed head. Regular trimming of seed heads encourages more owers. When removing dry, you have a reservoir of seeds ready for next year, then the remaining seed heads can be used for decorative purposes in arrangements. ese arrangements can be simply seed heads in a vase or in an elaborate arrangement, using them to add ow and volume. If seeds are to be stored, keep in recycled paper bags, keeping dry and label clearly. More treats are on the horizon with the opening of ower/horticultural shows locally and nationally. Look out for local church ower festivals and support them. Winchester Cathedral Festival of Flowers entitled “Resonance” is from 15th to 19th of September. e extravagance of owers will delight the senses and will leave you in awe of all the hard work and immense planning that has been happening throughout the COVID-19 restrictions. Also, not a piece of oral foam to be seen! Tickets are on sale from ursday 24th June and can be booked by phone: 01962 857275, or from the box o ce within the cathedral’s visitor centre. Many local ower clubs are involved with the spectacle. September’s meeting will be held on 2nd September and will feature 2 new NAFAS demonstrators.
