TALES FROM THE GRAVEYARD OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH, FAWLEY Written by Patricia Hedley-Goddard, Churchyard Archivist for the ancient parish church of All Saints’, Fawley There has been a church at Fawley since 971 A.D. and the graveyard contains over 3,500 known souls within it. Over the next few months, I will be writing up the stories of some of the people buried within the churchyard, many with living relatives who have so kindly contributed to these short histories. memorial at Chatham Dockyard and on the WW1 war memorial in All Saints’ Church, Fawley. e ship was also carrying the Secretary of State for In this o ering of ‘Tales’ I am ‘remembering and paying tribute’ to some of the brave young men who are either buried in the graveyard or mentioned on one of the two War Memorial plaques within the church. ere are 47 names relating to the First World War (WW1), but of these, only three are buried in the churchyard. ey are John William Kitcher who died of Spanish Flu on the 18th November 1918, H.C.M. Bunday who also died of Spanish Flu on the 12th November 1918; just one day a er the armistice was signed. e third man to die was Joseph Woolan who died on 19th October 1919. e cause of death is not known but possibly injuries received in combat. His name, sadly, does not appear on the war memorial, and his very elaborate private grave has since been damaged by work taking place in the graveyard. e Second World War (WW2) memorial immortalises 33 men who died, plus 4 civilians, the latter being victims of Air Raids. Two of these men are buried in Black eld Cemetery and two more are not listed on the church memorial. ere are also 27 graves within the Churchyard commemorating men who died either at RAF Calshot or in air crashes as a result of combat duties, some of whom have been discussed in previous issues. Our rst hero who gave his life to keep our country free from German aggression during WW1 is Signalman William George Waterman RNVR. William was born at Fawley on the 10th September 1895, and was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth (nee Hayward) Waterman. He had a brother Frederick, and two sisters Polly (who married into the Kitcher family), and Mary who married a Mr. Gardner. Arthur was the Inn Keeper at the Falcon Inn, Fawley, and also owned Slades Farm at Boldre, where he died in 1915. William joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and served as a signalman, service number Z/4464, on board HMS Hampshire. e Hampshire le harbour on the 5th June 1916 from Scapa Flow and struck a mine that had been laid by the German submarine U75 o of the Orkneys.
