Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) Board members Jill Gower and Alan Titheridge went into the classroom to explain to the children why the pier and train is so important to the local community and why so much money is needed to restore it. e pupils really took to the project, involving themselves in understanding what is needed to be done. Orchard School Year 2 teacher Andy Bowie said: “ Here at Orchard Infant School we truly believe that community is at the heart of everything we do, so much so that it is one of our Core Values in school. For this reason, our Year 2 children decided to embark on a fundraising mission for the Hythe Pier”. If you visited Hythe on Friday 11th February you would have seen ninety children singing in the High Street, visiting Grove Gardens and selling cakes, candle holders, postcards and other handcra ed items at Pier Pupils from Orchard Infant School in Dibden Purlieu pictured together with Alan Titheridge, Dr. Julian Lewis and Head Teacher Mrs West presence in the town centre really drew in the crowds. The pupils have developed an awareness of their local community and the importance of this very unique historical landmark in our community. Blue Funnel Ferries in conjunction with Hythe Pier Heritage Association made the train available for each of the 90 pupils to enjoy a ride along the 700 yards Grade II listed pier and New Forest West MP, Dr. Julian Lewis was on hand to o er his support. Alan Titheridge says: “It was a pleasure for HPHA to be involved and we can’t thank them enough with every penny they raised helping us to secure the pier and its railway for their future”. Entrance to raise funds for HPHA’s restoration programme. Proud parents and friends as well as ferry passengers and Hythe shoppers delighted the children by buying almost everything! Head Teacher Mrs West was thrilled by the hard work, dedication and community spirit shown by pupils and sta , saying: “In addition to learning that Hythe is the 7th longest pier in the UK, that King George took a ride on the train in 1944 and is the oldest pier train in the world they also raised a whopping £680, which certainly will help this worthy local cause. We are all very proud of our year 2 children; they were so engaged in the local community and their Lyndhurst Parish Council is planning a party on Saturday 4th June – but they need your help! e celebrations will include an exhibition of local life during the Queens long reign. Do you have any photo’s you would like to share portraying family, school and village life as it was then? Perhaps you have photographs of previous Jubilee celebrations? If so they would love to feature them in their exhibition.
