Sergeant Sam Sellen, and Sergeant Sean Pothecary, 53 Squadron, recently set up the greenspace project to make use of a disused and overgrown MOD owned plot on Byams Lane. e project is aimed at promoting the health bene ts of the outdoors and wildlife conservation and bringing together the local community. e long- term project will include a community allotment, a tranquil memorial garden planted with poppies and forget-me-nots, a community compost area and wildlife area with a swing. So far the team of volunteers both regimental and civilians have cleared and rotovated the area and started work on building eight allotment plots making use of donated wood from Solent Gateway Ltd. to build up the raised beds, the regimental team had already had a bit of practice making raised beds as they built a raised bed allotment area for an education project at Marchwood Junior School earlier this year. e team have also made a start to include a walkway through the centre of the plot using slabs kindly donated by local company Ethan Mason paving. A team of volunteers from Marchwood based shipping company K & A have been up on site helping out and recently donated and planted an apple tree in the allotment. Another apple tree has been donated by Compass Group, who supplies the catering on the Military Base in Marchwood, with volunteers popping down to the site to help out in their breaks and a er their shi s have nished. In addition to the voluntary support, Hampshire County Councillor, David Harrison, has taken a personal interest in the project and has given an initial £600 funding grant to the project. He recently visited the site to take a look at the progress. Some of the money has gone towards the purchase of a brand new polytunnel that will be used to grow fruit and vegetables that once harvested will be donated to the local food banks. e project has also received conservation support from the Hampshire Wildlife Trust Project Wilder team. Project leader, Sergeant Sam Sellen comments “Growing our own food was a necessity for me growing up; I wanted to set up the greenspace project to provide a space where local community groups and families could come together to enjoy growing fruit and vegetables that in turn will go out to local food banks to provide fresh produce to those most in need.” e team welcome volunteers to go down and help them or if you have any garden items that you could donate to the project please email: Greenspace. Project@yahoo.com e Herald will be following the project so keep an eye out for updates in future editions. Greenspace project team military and civilian volunteers with Councillor David Harrison
