On Saturday 11th June Southampton based children’s cancer charity, Abby’s Heroes, took over the foreshore of Hythe Marina for their rst ever Dragon Boat Festival. e sun was shining and there was an array of fancy dress including a Hawaiian themed team and an entire wedding party with a Vicar to boot! Unsurprisingly the ‘I do’ team took the prize for the best dressed team complete with their bride and groom, bridesmaids and wedding guests with fascinators and hats! 9 teams of 17 took part, each paddling and drumming through 3 races each to nd the fastest 3 teams. e quickest teams then went head-to-head in the nal. Team Drum and Race who had clearly brought the sun along with their grass skirts won by the slimmest of margins. With less than a second between all three teams, Calshot Rowers (not actually a rowing team!) came second and Sophie’s Allstars came third. e day was a huge success with a real festival vibe, and an amazing £12,000 was raised. Plans are already being made for another Festival next year. Well what an achievement! The 24 hour Pilatesathon organised by Louisa Daniels and her team took place last month on the 10th -11th June at her Studio ‘Pilates Studio New Forest’ on Hythe Marina to raise much needed funds for Chance for Charlie. e 24 hours was split into 2 hour sessions with Louisa running all the sessions across the full 24 hours along with the help of friends Donna Osman and Vanessa Adamson who stayed up for the duration. Each session had its own musical theme through the eras which saw the three ladies dress up along with many who took part.  e themes included Awesome 80’s, 60’s Summer of Love, School Disco, Boy band, Girl Power and Disco Fever.  is certainly helped keep everyone’s spirits high especially in the early hours. Various pictures and live videos were shared on social media throughout the 24 hours which really helped push the Just Giving Page. e staggering amount raised was an incredible £8420 thanks to everyone who booked a session (some booked multiple) everyone that donated online or in person and sponsors including WHSmith Local in Dibden Purlieu, Oyster Financial Planning in Hythe, Anthony James Properties also in Dibden Purlieu and Tarot Spirits. Also a shout out to all the kind people who took time to pop by with various treats to keep the ladies going. All the money raised at the event will go to Chance for Charlie to help Charlie’s family to purchase an all-terrain wheelchair. Charlie has recently turned 13 and has a progressive muscle wasting condition called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. is vicious condition meant that Charlie lost the ability to walk in March 2020. Charlie’s family want him to be able to join them on dog walks in the forest and be able to enjoy the beach, unfortunately his current wheelchair isn’t able to deal with the terrain. As the 24 hours came to an end, Charlie and his family along with many others who had taken part in some of the sessions were there to celebrate the huge achievement and thank Louisa in person. Combined with money that Charlie’s family had previously raised, the total from this event and an anonymous donation, Charlie’s Wheelchair has now been ordered! Players and supporters of local rugby powerhouse Fawley RFC are delighted that work can now get underway for their new Clubhouse. Regular readers will know that planning rst started way back in 2013 when the club was still located at Waterside Sports and Social Club. e club moved to Newlands Park at Gang Warily at the start of the 2014 rugby season. Since moving, the club made a lot of progress in improving the facilities with both pitches fully operational and oodlit. Also on site they have the storage containers and a welfare unit to house all the rugby equipment and supply hot tea with a bacon roll on a Sunday morning. eir junior section has gone from an initial 40 players to nearly 200 children aged 4-16, including their fantastic girl’s side - the Fawley Flames. eir senior side has celebrated recent promotions and has achieved great results in the 2021/22 season and their walking rugby section has grown from strength to strength for all those retired players, or for anyone wanting to give rugby a go but without the contact. From September a challenge but the club’s dedicated band of volunteers are walking, cycling and baking their way to their target of £350,000. All this means that the work can begin to clear the site and it is hoped the new building will be fully operational by early 2023. As always, the clubwelcomes all newplayers, supporters, fundraisers, sponsors and volunteers regardless of experience. ey will be looking for volunteers to clear the site, help in xtures and furnishing and also sta ng the building once complete. Rugby has had a strong presence on the Waterside since the 1920’s and it is with pride that Fawley RFC can celebrate the centenary with somewhere to nally call home. To register your interest in playing, helping or sponsoring the club, please email enquiries@fawleyrfc. co.uk To make a donation please visit: www.justgiving.com/ campaign/Fawleyrcfclubhouse 2022 there will also be a Colts team for boys leaving juniors but yet to make the senior side. In order to continue with the growth and integration in the local community Fawley RFC needed to have a permanent presence on the site. ey put forward a planning application to construct a permanent building on the site which was approved in 18th March 2020. However, when the dreaded COVID-19 hit, building prices sky-rocketed and the club were forced to re-think their proposal. Planning permission was re-submitted earlier this year with a simpler design using an easy to construct modular building which was a much more affordable option. The club is delighted to confirm that this has now been approved and building can now start. Fundraising is constantly How the new clubhouse will look Are you an aspiring writer looking to improve? Waterside Writers are looking for new members to join their group. ey are a collection of friendly people, with di erent writing styles and ambitions, but all committed to improving their work and helping others to do the same. ey are looking for people who are interested in developing their writing. We distributed 240 cakes, 125 cream teas, 30 savoury teas and 40 buttered scones with strawberries, 100 hot dogs and ketchup, 200 ice creams, endless cups of tea and coffee (16 pints of milk were used), and we had 300-400 attendees, 3 hours of dry weather and over 50 fantastic volunteers. He was a member of the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards WW2. Cecil has returned every year since the end of the war, to honour and remember his fallen colleagues. He holds a simple low key service at the war memorial situated at the east end of Lepe Beach overlooking the Solent. Major Graeme Greene organised and introduced the ceremony. is Year 2 former members of the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards attended, Major Shaun Leavey (retired) and Lt. Colonel Luke Duckworth (retired), plus colleagues of Lepe Country Park, e D-Day Lepe Heritage Group and friends, plus members of the public who were passing by. Cecil is now 98 and a half years old, and is supported by his sons and nephew on this annual pilgrimage. Cecil, a veteran of D-Day, stands and reads out the 176 names of the members of the Regiment who gave their lives in World War ll. ‘In proud memory of all those of his comrades, who served and have died both during active service or in peace time and were known or unknown to those present. He remembers their service to their Country, for Peace and Freedom, and their comradeship with whom they served’. Cecil brings his own music with him so that a er the Exhortation and the nal words ‘We Will Remember em’ he can play ‘ e Last Post’, followed by one minute silence. Reveille is played and Wreaths are laid. Cecil Newton laid his wreath, and this year, as always, Gilly Drummond laid a wreath on behalf of Cadland Estate where so many of the soldiers and vehicles were hidden within the trees, prior to embarkation. Major Graeme Green laid a wreath on behalf of the Cecil talking about his medals to Peter Royal Dragoon Guards and Alison Steele placed a wreath on behalf of the Friends of Lepe. On 4th June Cecil and family then travel to Normandy for the commemoration service with other D-Day veterans, and Cecil scatters the Lepe Beach sand onto the Normandy beach. is year it was especially rewarding to see Peter, a 10 year old boy, talking to Cecil, asking him about his experiences and asking Cecil to explain the medals he was wearing. It is so important to have such a natural curiosity about such an important event. WWII history is rarely taught in schools, yet it is the foundation on which our free society is built.
