Many years ago in 1991, Derek Olden having an old tractor, had the idea of forming a club for owners of old tractors and engines (anything old), as there were no clubs or organisations in the area for like-minded people. So, in November 1991 Derek invited a group of friends and guests to the little old prefabricated Church Hall in Marchwood, where a friend was to show his old lms about old tractors. Expecting only one or two people to attend, surprisingly word spread and the hall was full to capacity (once the right Church Hall was found!), and hence the New Forest Vintage Tractor and Engine Club was formed. Over the years the Club has grown and now has well over 200 members meeting at Copythorne Village Hall on the last Friday of each winter month. e Club and the Committee has been led by Derek Olden since that day 31 years ago, and has created many opportunities for its members, being Club shows and meetings, supporting other vintage rallies and country shows around Hampshire and Dorset. Most importantly it has become a focal point for like-minded people to gather and exchange their knowledge and skills about maintaining old machinery and preserving old skills such as vintage ploughing, and keeping many machines in preservation. Derek nally decided to step down from the Club Chairmanship and Committee on the 25th November, exactly 31 years from the Clubs rst meeting. Derek with his wife Christine were presented with Honorary Membership along with an engraved vase, owers and a model of one of his tractors mounted on an engraved base. e New Forest Vintage Tractor & Engine Club is very well known throughout the New Forest and further a eld for its commitment to support events as a club, and creating opportunities for its members to display, work and play with their tractors, engines and other classic and interesting vehicles. e club has supported many local organisations over the years such as Longdown Activity Farm, Honeypot House and the Countryside Education Trust in Beaulieu, supporting and holding events and promotional activities, as well as fundraising for some of these and many small local New Forest charities. Since its inception, the Club and members have been involved with supporting local shows such as Netley Marsh Steam & Cra Fayre, Romsey Show, Alresford Show, Fawley Show, e New Forest Show and Hampshire County Show and many more. e Club with its strong committee will continue to support and o er opportunities to its members holding events and supporting many shows well into the future. On Derek’s nal night as Chairman almost all the Club membership and the Committee were in full attendance to thank him for his commitment and long service, and to wish him the best of luck and good health for the future, with an assurance of leaving the Club in good hands with a strong Committee taking it forward for the future.
