But thanks to the generosity of his ex-colleagues and the help of a specialist rehabilitation charity, Paul, who worked at ExxonMobil Fawley for 15 years, is now gradually rebuilding his life and looking to the future. Paul (53) says this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for his friends and family as well as the Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury (ARNI) stroke charity *. ExxonMobil Fawley has thanked the charity with a £3,000 donation to help it continue its vital work with Paul and others who have undergone life-changing e ects of stroke or other neurological injuries. “I am lucky to be here and there were times my family thought I wasn’t going to make it,” he said. “It has been difficult for everyone, but thanks to the medical staff, my family and friends and ARNI, I’m beginning to get my life back. After the stroke I had to have an operation to relieve immediately became friends over our love of cars,” he said. “When Paul’s wife Gail contacted me to tell me about his stroke the day after it happened, things didn’t look good. But he thankfully pulled through and is now looking to the future with his usual good wit and humour. After his stroke lots of colleagues were asking what they could do to help and with all the work that was being done to his house, I thought a lift would be a real necessity. I set up a GoFundMe account in April, and we quickly raised £3,600 towards the cost of the lift, which the family were very appreciative of. When ExxonMobil said they were able to make a donation, Paul said he wanted it to go to ARNI which has really helped him with his rehabilitation. Hopefully he will continue to improve and his great wit will definitely help see him through.” Paul has been taken care of by one of ARNI’s specialist trainers, Vir Musgrove-Dellino, who has helped him to gain control over his functional limitations from stroke. Dr Tom Balchin, Director of the charity, said: “This extremely kind donation will help us support survivors and families in the same kind of way as Paul, because we rely completely on donations. We are all volunteers at the charity and we will ensure that every penny of this superb donation will go straight to helping stroke survivors who need rehabilitation.” *ARNI (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) Institute is a national brain injury charity set up by stroke survivor Dr Tom Balchin in 1999. It has over 160 accredited and insured instructors across the UK. It supports hospitals by providing a communityintegration path when NHS therapy comes to an end, most o en due to acknowledged lack of time and resources. e charity helps stroke survivors in particular, who require further ‘retraining’ by linking them with its highly quali ed instructors and supporting their individual progression. See www.arni.com pressure on my brain which involved taking out part of my skull, and I spent three months in a rehabilitation facility afterwards. It has affected mobility on the left side of my body, but I am still here. Our house had to be converted for my wheelchair, and my friend John raised a lot of money to help pay for a lift so I could have access. I am very lucky to have such good friends and to have worked for such a generous company as ExxonMobil. I used to love cycling before I had this stroke, and I’m really looking forward to getting a specially-adapted electric trike so I can get back to it.” John ompson, electrical engineering supervisor at ExxonMobil Fawley, has been friends with Paul since he started working there 10 years ago. “Paul was already working at Fawley and we John is pictured with Paul at the lift he and colleagues at ExxonMobil Fawley helped fundraise towards. The company has now made a donation to the charity which helped with Paul’s care and rehabilitation Drop Off Centre in Dibden Purlieu for Ukraine A drop o site for donations for Ukraine has been set up by New Forest for Ukraine, a registered Community Interest Group, set up by a group of like-minded volunteers living in the New Forest. e drop o centre located at: Holly Villa, Beaulieu Road, Dibden Purlieu, SO45 4JJ, is now available for local residents to leave donations for refugees and those on the front line caught up in the war. e group are united by their passion to help the people displaced by the war in Ukraine. eir focus is collecting and delivering the latest required aid DIRECTLY to refugees in Poland and Ukraine.
