Lemony Garlic Chicken Thighs with Butter Bean Mash ANCIENT EGYPT e Southampton Ancient Egypt Society (SAES) will be holding their next meeting over Zoom on Saturday 21st January for Joyce Tyldesley: ‘Nefertiti’s face: investigating Egypt’s most famous queen’. More than three thousand years ago a sculptor working in the royal city of Amarna carved the head of an Egyptian queen. at queenwasNefertiti, consort of the “heretic pharaoh” Akhenaten. Plastered and painted, Nefertiti’s bust depicted an extraordinarily beautiful woman. However, Akhenaten’s reign was drawing to an end, and the royal family was soon to be written out of Egypt’s o cial history. Not long a er its creation the stone Nefertiti was locked in a storeroom and forgotten. In 1912 the bust was re-discovered and transported to Germany. Egypt has yielded more than its fair share of artistic masterpieces, but it is di cult to think of another sculpture that has so successfully bridged the gap between the ancient and modern worlds. e timeless beauty of the Nefertiti bust both attracts us and sparks our imagination, but in so doing it obscures our view of the past. In this lecture Professor Joyce Tyldesley explores the creation of a cultural icon, from its ancient origins to its modern context. Professor Tyldesley is professor of Egyptology in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Egyptology (CAHAE) at Manchester University. She studied the archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean at Liverpool University, then obtained a D.Phil in prehistoric archaeology from Oxford University. She holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton and is a Research Associate of the Manchester Museum. Prior to joining the University of Manchester she taught prehistory and Egyptology at Liverpool University. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
