Under the direction of their new musical director Emily Christian, they sang a variety of jazz, blues, and other well known numbers from legendry composers including Cole Porter and George Gershwin. Accompanied by regular keyboard wizz Jamie Harris, they opened with a Cole Porter medley where the dynamics di erentiated each number nicely. en there followed ‘Blue Moon’, ‘I got plenty of nothing’ and ‘It aint necessarily so’ all sung with verve and passion . We were then treated to a Jamie Harris piano solo as he beautifully played a Gershwin number, bringing the keyboard to life as it re ected the composer’s pathos. e choir returned to sing out the rst half with the moody ‘Summertime’, e way you look tonight’, and the memorable bluesy/gospel ‘Battle of Jericho’. A er a 20 minute interval the choir returned with ‘Blue Moon’, then easing their way into ‘Nobody knows the trouble I see’, and then ‘ ey can’t Jamie’s keyboard did full justice to this soulful number. e choir then saw us through to the end of the evening with a further four numbers - ‘Down by the riverside’, ‘Every time we say goodbye’, ‘Anything goes’, and ‘Blue skies’ - all sung with gusto and some good harmonies. It was good to welcome the Woodsider’s back. ere is no substitute for a live musical performance and they proved that with this solid performance. You can catch them in May next year when they are singing Stainer’s ‘Cruci xion’. e Christmas Tree Festival in St John’s Church in Hythe, proved more popular than ever last year with people visiting from far and wide. Organised and run by local charity Hythe 2000, the event saw decorated Christmas trees and wreaths on display in the church all donated by local schools, playgroups, businesses, community groups and individuals. e church was open daily from 26th November – 13th December with a silent auction running for each tree. On Saturday 10th December a free concert also took place in the church, with music from Andrew Rance, e Goodnight Sweethearts and the Melody Makers. Hythe 2000 runs three projects, Smarties Parent & Toddler Group, Gateway I.T. for All and the Primary School Project. Monies raised during the Christmas Tree Festival will go towards the Hythe 2000 projects and St John’s church. A huge thank you to all who supported the event. Hythe 2000 Christmas Tree Festival 2022 Hythe 2000 Christmas Tree Festival take that away from me’. Jamie then pulled out all the stops as he hammered out a tricky version of ‘I got rhythm’. (I think the piano is still rocking as I write this). Everyone gathered their breath as Woodside’s new musical director – Emily Christian took centre stage to sing ‘Can’t help lovin’ dat man’. Emily is a classically trained and experienced singer, and this shone through as her strong soprano voice – and e Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Anne in Hythe are happy to holding their Messy Church sessions again, including cra s, games, stories and food.
