She started her life in Hythe with a career in nursing at Hythe Memorial Hospital running the minor injuries unit that she loved. Gwen had so much love to give (not that you would know that on your rst meeting!) but helping people was the way she could. When Gwen decided to retire from nursing she didn’t do the standard retirement thing, instead Gwen and her husband Ernie ‘Will’ bought a shop in Pylewell Road in Hythe and set up her fantastic Flower Shop – Gwen Hern Florist. In my biased opinion, the best, most haunted and quirky shop in Hythe! e shop was always lled with di erent types of owers and a great selection of plants, accompanied with loads of laughter and various audio books could be heard blasting out from the work room! She put her heart and soul in to the shop as did Ernie ‘Will’ as the best delivery driver in town. Gwen had the shop for many years, but in 2004 she decided to retire, for real this time! Whilst being retired she was one of the busiest people, there was a constant string of visitors young and old and pets, well they were always encouraged! If the visitors weren’t enough there was always the knitting, sewing or bird watching hobbies to choose from, if anyone needed a hat or a scarf she would get it done in no time. Gwen always had time to listen whether it was to give advice or just so you could vent. Sadly in 2014 Ernie ‘Will’ Gwen’s husband died aged 95, but Gwen carried on with all the hobbies and entertaining traditions, but some did unfortunately fall by the wayside. Latterly with mobility issues things did become more challenging but always determined not to give in, she carried on strong, always positive and giving things a good go. Gwen was an amazing woman who touched so many people’s lives; the world has lost one of the best. Gwen with husband Ernie ‘Will’
