Over ninety works were on display and sales of paintings, portfolios and cards were very pleasing, in spite of the challenging weather. e work demonstrated the variety of skills and techniques used by members and included media such as watercolour, acrylic, oil and printing. e Society meets on the third Wednesday of the month in the Community Centre at Lyndhurst, SO43 7NY, from 7.30pm to 9.30 pm. Usually, the group enjoy a demonstration led by a local artist. However, the varied programme has included inter-active sessions such as Chinese Painting and fascinating talks; recently a talk explored of the worlds of Caravaggio and Rembrandt. New members are always very welcome and guests can join in any of the sessions for £5. e full programme for the coming year is available on the Society’s website: www.newforestartsociety. weebly.com In February Stephen Foster demonstrated the use of a palette knife to create a painting of the New Forest. Max Hale will be visiting them on Wednesday 19th April with a demonstration entitled ‘Towards Abstraction’. Ferry Skipper’s Final Journey by Alan Titheridge Former Hythe Ferry skipper John Malkinson, who passed away aged 92 on 5th January made his nal journey on the passage early in February (4th). John’s son Patrick, who succeeded John as a Hythe Ferry skipper spoke a few words before casting John’s ashes to the wind and tides from the deck of Ocean Scene. John had captained Hythe’s ferry boats for 32 years between 1962 and 1995 before “retiring”. Unable to adapt to “pipe and slippers”, he subsequently found his way into several part-time jobs including skippering boats on the Beaulieu River before nally accepting the advancement of the years. One can only imagine the yarns being spun between John and other legendary former Hythe Ferry captains, J.H. Knight, Dickie, Henry, Wilf and Harry Banks, Jumbo Randall and Stanley Renouf. at would be one conversation worth listening into!
