Battersea’s Muddy Dog Challenge is an obstacle course you can tackle with your dog by your side. e aim of the challenge is simply to have fun while raising money for Battersea. Participants can choose from a distance of 2.5km and 5km – both courses are equally fun (and muddy). Pet lovers will be faced with a variety of wacky obstacles to jump under, over or through, including wading through the mud in the Canine Crawl, weaving through the Mutt Mazes, and not to forget the opportunity to unleash your inner child crawling through the Ball Pit Tunnels. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part – they can run or walk the course with or without a dog, take the whole family along, join up with your friends and their canine companions as part of a team, or take on the challenge solo. e best part? Participants can train as much or as little as they’d like, it’s all about having fun! Each participant is encouraged to raise a target of £100 for Battersea so the charity can continue to be there for dogs and cats everywhere. For ideas and inspiration, the Battersea website has plenty of fundraising tips. Once registered, participants will receive a Muddy Dog Challenge t-shirt and dog bandana to take part in on the day, as well as a wellearned medal and rosette for making it across the nish line. e Muddy Dog Challenge New Forest is taking place on Saturday 22nd April at Breamore House, Hampshire, SP6 2DF. New research from the University of Helsinki, Finland, found that puppies who were fed mainly dog food, such as kibble, were more likely to su er from gut health issues in later life, compared to dogs who were fed a raw food diet, or a mix of both. e Managing Director of Healthy Pet Store said that because raw food is unprocessed, it retains bacteria and enzymes which are needed for a healthy gut and strong immune system. 7,000 dog owners were surveyed over a ten year period to nd out what they fed their dogs. e caregivers were asked whether their dogs had experienced gut issues that lasted more than three weeks. It was found that dogs mostly fed dog food were 29% more likely to develop gut health issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss and loss of appetite, compared to dogs who ate mostly unprocessed food such as raw meat. Deborah added: “This study supports everything we believe in at Healthy Pet Store and has shown the importance of raw feeding for potentially protecting against gastrointestinal problems. There are also other proven benefits of raw food including improved skin, coat and dental hygiene to name a few. Feeding your dog a balanced diet is key and there are easy ways to achieve this with home prepared meals. Even feeding your pet unprocessed food from time to time may offer many benefits for their health. I would recommend incorporating something unprocessed such as raw meat several times a week if you can.” e research found a strong correlation between dogs’ diets as puppies and whether or not they developed gut problems in later life. Healthy Pet Store based in Totton has been an advocate of raw-feeding since 2014. e store has one of the largest ranges of unprocessed foods in the region to allow caregivers to prepare varied and nutritious meals for their pets.
