Olliewon theChris EllisAward for a short documentary lm he made whilst on board the Ocean Youth Trust (OYC) South’s Proli c last summer. Chris Ellis was one of the founders of the Ocean Youth Club in 1960. He le a fund to help crew members aged under 25 who have enjoyed sailing with OYC and would like to be able to a ord to sail again the following year. e Chris Ellis Award is presented annually with entrants submitting a piece of work based on their voyage. As well as the accolade Ollie will receive funding towards a future sailing trip. Ollie’s love of creating videos started when he was aged 8, having saved up his pocket money he bought his rst camera and started lming random things. Fast forward 7 years and 3 camera upgrades later, Ollie is now a passionate lmmaker and has started his own business from his hobby, tting his lming in at weekends and school holidays around his studies at Applemore College. In summer 2021 Ollie lmed his rst video as ‘O.J.S Films’ with the Royal Southampton Yacht Club (RSYC) Trust, who had supported Ollie previously along with other young carers to do some sailing courses. He then went on to work with local companies lming adverts and promotional lms, using the money he made to invest in his business to grow it further. As well as working with local businesses, Ollie is Ollie Smith passionate about using his skills to help others and has o ered his services free of charge to create videos and documentaries for a number of local charities and not for pro t organisations. Ollie comments: “I feel very happy and proud of myself to have won the Chris Ellis Award, it’s given me a new perspective, it’s allowed me to step back and look at what I have actually achieved in the few short years I have been running my business. I can’t thank the Ocean Youth Trust, Olivia Inspires and the RSYC Trust enough for sparking my interest in films.” Looking to the future Ollie has already secured himself a place at City College to study Media and he is hoping to enter some of his lms into local lm festivals, as well as saving up for his rst proper cinema camera to further boost the quality of his work. He comments: “The main reason why I make films is to make a difference. I’m always trying to get better at what I do, for me and for my clients and the charities I’m working with. To me everything I make has to top what I’ve made previously as challenging myself and improving on my skills is what I believe is best for those that I’m making the films for.” For more information about O.J.S.
