In a recent article, Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) con rmed that, according to their research, 70% of UK parents have not put a legal guardian in place to care for their children when they die. Worse still, SFE found that 80% of parents do not know that social services or the courts can step in to decide what happens to children if both parents have died leaving young children behind. Michael Culver, Chair of SFE, calls it “Shocking how many parents don’t have a will in place or haven’t appointed a legal guardian for their children” and urges everyone, especially parents, to “Keep your will up to date and take legal advice when life-changing events happen.” The SFE research shows that approximately 50% of UK wills are out of date and many people don’t even have a will.
