All the funds raised will help support Oakhaven Hospice’s free of charge services for patients and their loved ones, both in the hospice and in homes throughout the New Forest, Totton, and Waterside communities. Walkers taking part were asked to raise additional sponsorship, as the registration fee only covered the cost of event administration. So far, they have raised over £32,000 with donations still coming in. Kindly sponsoring e Hospice Walk again this year was Pennyfarthing Homes, an awardwinning local home builder, who have been building homes in the New Forest area for over 40 years. A year on from Southern Water awarding volunteers at Solent Rescue Independent Lifeboat a £5,000 grant towards the replacement of their outdated D-Class lifeboat, they now have a replacement IB1 vessel ready for action. Based at Lepe Country Park, this new compact boat will allow the crew to get closer to shore and access shallower water than ever before, plus operate with less crew members than their larger Arctic 24 lifeboat meaning it can be utilised more o en while still o ering the same service. And the vessel has been given its name ‘Quantum Lepe’ following a competition at Wildground Infant School – with the winner being Evelyn aged 6. Alex Willumsen, Community Partnerships and Programme Manager at Southern Water, said: “We were delighted to support this fantastic charity and the amazing life-saving service it provides in The Solent. It is very exciting now to see this lifeboat out on the water – and with such a fabulous name too!” Lee Cooper, Solent Rescue Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: “The arrival of this new boat would not have been possible without the fantastic support of the team at Southern Water. The arrival of “Quantum Lepe” gives us much greater capability to help those in distress on the Solent and it’s shores, the crew have been massively impressed, not just with the boat but also with the fantastic name provided by Evelyn at Wildground Infant School. I am sure the boat will serve us well for years to come” As is tradition a naming ceremony took place recently where Solent Rescue’s new lifeboat was o cially named ‘Quantum Lepe’. Naming ceremonies are believed to bring good fortune to new vessels. Naming ceremony for Solent Rescue’s new lifeboat ‘Quantum Lepe’

Two new Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) have been introduced by New Forest District Council supported by Forestry England, the New Forest National Park Authority and the Verderers of the New Forest. e use of BBQs and res in the Forest, and feeding and petting ponies or donkeys are all banned, with those failing to comply liable to a xed penalty ne or prosecution. eir introduction follows repeated re damage to the Forest caused by camp res and BBQs, and the New Forest will be patrolling and engaging with the public to explain more about the new rules. Signs and information will be in place across the Forest. Along with other key things to know about visiting the area, the new rules will also be highlighted in the New Forest Code, widely publicised across the area and shared by local tourism businesses with many visitors before and during their stay. e new orders apply from 1st July and where necessary can be enforced by issuing xed penalty notices of £100, a sum which can rise to £1,000 following a successful prosecution. Cllr Dan Poole, New Forest District Council’s portfolio holder for community, safety and wellbeing, said, “Most people enjoying the Forest do so with great care and regard for the New Forest Code. By making these PSPOs, we expect a reduction in the rare but damaging cases of anti-social behaviour associated with wildfires and barbecues on the Forest, and the feeding and petting of Forest animals.” Charlotte Belcher, Community Manager at Forestry England, said: “The New Forest is a haven for nature and a special place to spend time. We want to make sure everyone coming here, locals and visitors alike, can enjoy their visit and do so responsibly. growing risk of wild res due to increasingly hotter and drier conditions. e PSPO bans the lighting of res of any type including BBQs and any outdoor cooking facilities or equipment. It also makes it an o ence to place, throw or drop items likely to cause a re such as lit cigarettes. Concern over the safety of the public and Forest animals, following injuries to people and animal deaths resulting from being fed human food, created the need to better manage public interactions with these free-roaming animals. e PSPO relating to this activity bans feeding and petting ponies or donkeys on the Forest. It only takes one spark to start a wildfire. These new rules will help us ensure more people understand why it’s just not worth taking that risk. Please enjoy the Forest but always bring a picnic instead of a BBQ.” Patrick Heneghan, Deputy Chair of the New Forest National Park Authority, said: “The New Forest National Park is a world capital for wildlife, with many rare species and habitats. This unique landscape is created with the help of grazing by commoners’ animals who play a vital role in creating and maintaining the habitat that allows other species to flourish. It’s important to recognise that they are not tame animals and can unexpectedly bite and kick. It’s logical that we must take steps to ensure the precious landscape and wildlife is protected, as well as keeping people safe. Joint patrols by the partners will focus on engagement and education, and we’re sure that the majority of people will continue to respect the New Forest Code.” Jonathan Gerrelli from the Verderers of the New Forest, said: “A number of people have been badly injured by ponies which have been fed and become demanding. It is unfair on the animals which have to be removed permanently from their home if they injure someone and it is distressing for members of the public, including children, who may be kicked or bitten. The ponies and donkeys are not domesticated, and they should be treated as wild animals, not pets.” More information on the Public Space Protection Orders can be found online at: www.newforest.gov. uk/PSPO Know Before You Go this Summer – New Rules Come into Force in the New Forest Continued from page 4 BEAULIEU 4 RIVERS CRUISE Join e Mission to Seafarers and help to support their work caring for seafarers around the world, on a ve hour ‘Beaulieu 4 Rivers’ excursion from Southampton aboard the M/V ‘Ocean Scene’ (Blue Funnel Cruises). Lincoln and Beary performed three times to three di erent audiences and happily chatted away to the visitors before and a er each performance. Lincoln’s act was very well received by each audience and they were very impressed with his manners and his con dence to get up and perform. When asked how he felt a er his performances Lincoln said: “I want to do it all over again, everyone was so kind to me. I feel good for making everyone smile!” As well as Beary, Lincoln owns several other puppets, Lincoln and Beary performing at the Horrill Centre including some homemade. ROTARY ‘KIDSOUT’ On a sunny, hot June day, 10 Rotarians from Hythe and Waterside Rotary escorted 30 pupils from Oak Lodge School, along with 10 of their teachers, for a fun day out at Paulton’s Park. As part of the national Rotary ‘KidsOut’ annual event, Rotarians provided transport to and from the park as well as escorted the children around the rides. ey also made up the lunch-time sandwiches from very kind donations of food provided by Lidl Distribution in Nursling. Hythe & Waterside Rotary President, David Saunders, said of the event: “We are so pleased to be taking part in this fun day out again this year. We know how much it means to the children who are always very grateful and have so much fun on the day”. Hythe of Activity Day is an opportunity for all the clubs, charities, social groups, societies, lunch clubs, community group, support groups etc. to ‘set up stall’ in Hythe Village Centre to promote their activities to the community. Hythe is rich in support and things to do but many people are still not aware of all that’s available, hopefully this will bring in new members as well as volunteers and even sponsors. Hythe of Activity was refreshed last year and returned to the High Street where it began. Along with the presentation of the Community Spirit Awards, it inadvertently became one of the social highlights. Visitors commented on their astonishment at how much went on in Hythe & Dibden and the attendees had a successful recruitment and networking day. is year’s Hythe of Activity Day is taking place on Saturday 5th August, 10am to 3pm. HMS Sultan chu ed around the eld delighting people with rides and the petting farm with baby goats was particularly popular. ere were two food areas, one by the lake where visitors enjoyed the model boats. He said, “It was great to see so many serving members and veterans by Fawley Parish Council to be part of Fawley Armed Forces Day following the announcement that they could not go ahead with their show this year. ey brought along over 150 classic cars and military vehicles, including ‘Herbie’. ‘Captain America’ also turned up and had a lot of fun meeting the children and riding around on vehicles he recognised! Helen Porteus of Fawley Show said, “It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to reach out to the community by collaborating with Fawley Parish Council’s Armed Forces Day, putting Fawley on the map.” As promised, at precisely 15.38 the main attraction of the day, a Supermarine Spit re did three low passes over the show, the distinctive throaty rumble of the engines and iconic silhouette brought a few to happy tears. And as her engines faded into the distance the estimated crowd of around 4000 started to make their tired, and happy way home. Some of the best headline names in Comedy were presented alongside a live podcast recording, a tribute show and exhibition celebrating Tommy Cooper, a show for children, a national stand-up comedy competition and a course for stand-up comedy beginners. e New Forest Comedy Festival was created as a partnership with Culture in Common, e Attic in Totton, Forest Forge eatre in Ringwood, Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton, Forest Arts Centre in New Milton as well as Leicester Square eatre and the Museum of Comedy in London. Culture in Common is a brand new programme creating more opportunities for residents to see and take part in creative activities across the New Forest, supported by Arts Council Working with our partners at The Attic, Forest Forge Theatre, Hanger Farm Arts Centre, Forest Arts Centre and Vibrant Forest Brewery, together with Leicester Square Theatre and the Museum of Comedy ensured a high quality programme that reached parts of the New Forest that rarely get one of the most popular forms of entertainment. I was really surprised and delighted that the Stand-Up workshops for beginners sold out and were so successful that the groups want to continue to meet regularly to write and perform comedy gigs into the future. The festival brought different generations together to address challenging issues of our time with humour and helped us all to feel a bit brighter about the future and the place that we live in - which was a result in my book.” e festival was brought to a close with the nal of the rst New Forest Comedian of the Year held at Hanger Farm Arts Centre, where Sallyann Fellowes was announced as a winner and the remaining competitors head straight for the semi nals of the national New Comedian of the Year competition at Leicester Square eatre. Artist Development and Design at Leicester Square eatre and organiser of New Comedian of the Year competition, David Hardcastle added: “It was great for Leicester Square Theatre to be able to hold heats of the National New Comedian of the Year competition in the New Forest, since we trialled it in York a few years ago. We were delighted that so many local New Forest comedians stepped up to the challenge, especially as, for some, it was their first time on stage - while All the finalists will go through to the quarter finals of the national competition in London in the Autumn.” e idea of New Forest Comedy Festival was born from one man’s mission to bring comedy to Totton, Owner of e Attic at River Studios, Chris Grayston. A er consulting with local residents and venues around the Forest, there was a theme that all wanted to be part of something bigger and let our local community know we are here and what we can provide. He added: “What an amazing turnout! The Attic venue was sold out during the festival for several events, including Richard Herring, Ivo Graham, Vittorio Angelones and the festival all day performances. There is definitely a need for more comedy in the area, and the idea of a festival for the New Forest was to really make an impact. My venue is only so big! Together, as a group of local venues, we were able to really make an impact and get the New Forest community laughing!” Venues across the New Forest were invited to take part in e New Forest Comedy Festival and included: Vibrant Forest Brewery in Hardley, e Dusty Barrel, Hythe, Jubilee Hall, Fawley and the Royal British Legion in Black eld as well as e Attic and Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton, Forest Forge eatre in Ringwood and Forest Arts Centre in New Milton. Taproom Manager at Vibrant Forest Brewery Ryan Dack said: “A massive thank you for involving us. From our point of view, it has been a massive success and brought a lot of energy into the local area. We can’t wait to see what you planned next!” Vibrant Forest Brewery hosted the rst performances of Stand Up comedy beginners that had completed the festival course run by Gemma Leader of Above Your Nerve at e Dusty Barrel. Participant Tim Kershaw said: “I wanted to try something new and to meet funny local people and I did. The course was brilliant and more in depth than I thought it would be - the comedy writing remaining places were filled by national and international competitors. England. P r o g r a m m e Director at Culture in Common, Jacqui Ibbotson was delighted with the marked upli in engagement from the community with many new faces showing up, she said: “The first New Forest Comedy Festival was everything Culture in Common hoped it would be. In keeping with this year’s Hawaiian theme, friends and family donned grass skirts and owery shirts to get into the festival spirit. BrannFest showcases upcoming local artists, and throughout the day festival-goers enjoyed performances from Munro, Miylah, Manni, John & Ze Harris, Broken Bones, Dowding, (also Chris’s sister!) and Clare Adams, Pastoral Coordinator, represented the Charity and had several eager, young volunteers helping to sell Honeypot merchandise on the day. Donations were also made for BrannFest 2023 festival wristbands and for chilled beverages (ale kindly donated by Remedy Oak Brewing Co.), which helped to keep everyone cool in the heat of the sun! Pets as erapy are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and will be doing more events similar to this PATnic nationwide. I always see the smiles on people’s faces when we arrive, it really does change people’s lives to experience the love these dogs give.” His four-legged team for the day included ‘Gunner’ and ‘Milo’, both springer spaniels, and ‘Ernie’, a standard wired dachshund, as well as their hardworking owners – all four dogs were on their best behaviour, even with all the picnic treats on o er! One of the patients who enjoyed the PATnic commented a erwards: “The PATnic was great fun. The dogs were really nice too, I would love to see them again.” Katherine Curley, an Occupational erapist at South eld, was delighted that the dogs could once again visit South eld’s patients. “It’s amazing therapy for them, it helps them emotionally regulate and gives them a fun element of something new that they don’t see every day.
