John is an extremely knowledgeable and successful vegetable and fruit grower, author and show exhibiter. He is a member of the vegetable trials team at RHS Wisley and a RHS Fruit Judge, so he really ‘knows his onions’! John had previously given a talk to the Society on vegetable growing through the year, so it was particularly interesting to see his allotment bursting with fruits and vegetables, all in tip- top condition and to hear his many useful tips on how we could aim for similar growing success. John knows all the allotment holders and took the visitors on a tour of the extensive allotment site. ey were surprised at how many plots there were and all so individual in their layout and productivity. Unfortunately, the Beaulieu Village Fete on Saturday 15th July was cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions, so that the usual sale of plants prepared by the Society didn’t take place. Fortunately, the Beaulieu Horticultural Society Summer Show on Saturday 22nd July was held under cover in East Boldre Village Hall. Despite the atrocious weather conditions of strong winds and lashing rain members put on a colourful show of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The floral classes were generally well supported but the vegetable section entries were fewer than usual as outdoor grown produce seems to be slower to be ready to harvest this July. e weather has been so variable this summer. ere was a well-stocked plant stall and tea and cakes to enjoy. Lady Mont agu , President of the Society, complimented the society on lling the hall with colour and produce and noted the bene ts gardening brings for physical and mental health. She presented the NATIONAL CLEMATIS Woodlands Gardening Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month. Meetings start at 7.30pm at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Road, Netley Marsh. eir next meeting takes place on Tuesday 12th September for a talk by Debbie Green on National Clematis Viticella collection held and managed by Longstock Park Nursery. Container Planting Bartley Horticultural Society’s next meeting is on Thursday 21st September for a Practical Evening on Container Planting. Followed on Thursday 19th October for their Pumpkin & Marrow Competition, AGM& Pumpkin Carving. Meetings take place on the third Thursday of the month at Copythorne Parish Hall, Pollards Moor Road, Copythorne SO40 2NW at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. Visitors fee applies.
