Waterside Heritage was on hand to explain its work in recording the history of Hythe and other villages along the Waterside. Colin van Ge en gave a talk on Hythe’s connection to Flying Boats. Sarah Marsden conducted Hythe history walks. Blue Funnel Ferries contributed free train rides and informative workshop tours. ere was more than just history on show. Cartoonist Simon Chadwick and magician Roger Lapin demonstrated their talents, there was brass and ukulele music, historic vehicles, an aquatic car, tombola and other stalls and a pop-up café. A Red Arrows ypast was a bonus attraction. Although the prime objective behind the event was to remind attendees of the work HPHA is undertaking and the reason for it, the Heritage Day raised over £2000 towards ongoing restoration work. HPHA wish to record its appreciation of both the time and e ort given by its volunteers and the generosity of sponsors Hampshire County Council, HRG Tree Surgeons, ACT Property and PC Building Supplies. Plans are already in hand for both Heritage Day and the HPHA’s popular music festival Rock the Pier next year. Visitors to the HPHA Heritage Day HERITAGE OPEN DAY CELEBRATION WITH THE D-DAY LEPE HERITAGE GROUP by Patricia Hedley-Goddard On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September, the D-Day Lepe Heritage Group displayed their Exhibition in the Education Centre at Lepe Country Park. e Group’s previous exhibition at St. Andrew’s Church Dibden Purlieu was unable to display its centre piece model of a 7 foot long Landing Ship Tank (LST). is time it was proudly displayed complete with tanks and other vehicles. The exhibition also featured a 10 minute lm of the Duplex Drive (Swimming) Tank, presented and narrated by the late General Sir Robert Ford of the Royal Dragoon Guards. e two day Exhibition attracted many interesting and interested visitors. One young boy of about 9 years old was really fascinated to have many details explained to him. He asked many intelligent questions, and was a joy to speak with. Two of the comments in the visitor’s book were: “Amazing and educational time visiting as part of the heritage open day. Thank you for the time and effort to keep history alive.” “Wonderful exhibition - amazing detail - very great knowledge shared with visitors, well done all!” Our thanks to Lepe Country Park for the use of the Education Centre. D-Day Lepe Heritage Group’s exhibition Romsey Ghost Walks Will you dare to join in one of this year’s Romsey Ghost Walks? e walks start at 7.30pm from the Town Square on 26th October, 30th November and 28th December. Tickets are £7 and available from the Visitor Information Centre, Church Street, Romsey. All proceeds will be distributed to local charities.
