Rails that had been in place for decades have been li ed, sections of the decking that needed replacing have been prepared for removal and the old sleepers in the station have been taken up. Once new beams and timbers have been installed, the pier decking will be replaced and new rails and points laid. is is expected to be complete by the end of October. Designs are in hand for a new platform at the shore end station, which will take into consideration the new track level. It is anticipated the train will be able to terminate at the new station platform by the end of the year. e temporary platform currently in use will then be dismantled and removed. Beneath the structure a beam installed when the pier was built in 1880 has been preserved. Owing to its delicate condition it has been rubbed down and cleaned by hand before having several coats of high durability paint applied. Its function of supporting the pier decking has now been transferred to a bespoke replacement installed alongside. e work has been commissioned by Hythe Pier Heritage Association, nanced through grants and donations. e Association is keen to continue its restoration of Hythe’s Grade II listed Victorian pier and iconic electric narrowgauge railway but needs further support in donations that can be made via its website: www.hythepierha.org.uk It was a pleasure for Hythe & Waterside Rotary to welcome their second new member in two months. Allan Glass, who is a Councillor for both Fawley Parish Council and New Forest District Council Council, was inducted by President Jim Whitehouse. Allan, who is a retired engineering specialist, was given a warm welcome by members at a meeting in September.
