Winner for Best Open Space for the new dog park and Joint Winner for Best Community Event for Armed Forces Day featuring Fawley Show. e judges were impressed with the innovative use of underused spaces for the new Dog Park, keeping some of the original features of the old 9-hole golf course such as the bunkers and areas le wild to make it more interesting for both the dogs and wildlife. As well as fenced in wild areas to allow natural rewilding and places for birds. e judges particularly like that the Dog Park o ers a safe place for lone dog walkers to walk their dogs. Best Community Event: Armed Forces featuring Fawley Show, the judges were impressed with the Parish Council reaching out to save the much-loved local Fawley Show. ey liked that this created more involvement from veterans on Armed Forces Day as Fawley Show is run by veterans and set up in part to support veterans with long term mental health problems such as depression and PTSD. Merging the two shows together had made it an even bigger, better show for those coming. ey also liked Fawley Parish Council’s recognition that there are areas of nancial deprivation so had made the show free, so anyone could attend. Each category received a certi cate and a cheque for £100 which will go towards wild owers and next year’s Armed Forces Day. Cllr Chas McGill and Graham Charles from Fawley Show collecting the awards What a Fabulous Night! A recent charity event at e Glen in Hythe held in aid of Wessex Cancer Support raised £1,000. e event was organised by Arthur ‘DJ Arf’ Prouse and featured live music from the Dodgy Jammers and Disco Dave on turntables. e money raised came from a mix of ra e sales, donations on the night and a ‘top up’ from Jordan who is the landlord at e Glen. Maureen Robb, Manager of the Waterside Centre, said: “We are so grateful to Jordan and the team at The Glen for agreeing to host the night for us, not to mention their generous donation, to the Dodgy Jammers for their fantastic music and Disco Dave for, well, the disco! But it wouldn’t have happened without DJ Arf. We’re immensely grateful to Arthur for the music night and all the hard work he put into organising such a successful event for us.” All the money raised at Wessex Cancer Support’s events are used to provide practical and emotional support to anyone a ected by cancer in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
