A large crane was employed with impressive skill to li the three new steel beams that had arrived on a atbed lorry, into position. e planning proved awless as all three beams lined up with the pre-prepared bolt holes – a remarkable job considering that very little of the pier is actually straight! e crane then unloaded the new wooden cross beams that would sit on top of the steel beams to support the new planks that form the pier deck. Apart from a few minutes when the wooden planks and Positioning of one of the new beams (Photo: John Greenwood) The new beams bolted into position (Photo: John Greenwood) Track removed, lifting of the old boards (Photo: John Greenwood) Hythe Pier and its iconic Railway, the Association needs to acquire further funding. Donations can be made via its website: www. hythepierha.org.uk steel beams were being li ed overhead, access to the pier, train and ferry was maintained throughout e structure under the train track and new points has been reinforced and made safe, the old deck planks have been removed to be replaced with the new. A lot of previous movement relating to the old beam had made nding a true level for the new track something of a task, but with modern surveying and laser equipment HPHA is at the time of writing in a position to commence the installation of the new track. Once complete, a new platform will be constructed, hopefully in time for Christmas. HPHA is funding this restoration by means of grants and generous donations. To continue its plans to fully restore Second Chance Animal Rescue are once again holding their Annual Frost Fair on Saturday 18th November at Totton & Eling Community Centre from 10am-12noon. ere will be Christmas Stalls, books, jewellery and more! So put the date in your diary and get in the festive mood whilst supporting this well-deserved, local animal charity. Entrance is 20p per person. For more information call Liz on: 023 8086 5071.
