So it was with my distant relative, William George Ware. Born in Sussex in 1876, he served with the Royal Garrison Artillery at Gosport, and in 1902, married my 5th cousin, Louisa Ellen Wheeler, from Ashlett. William and Louisa came to live in Badminston Drove in Fawley - possibly in what is now my house - where their rst child, William junior, was born in 1903. William’s occupation is recorded as “General dealer”, no doubt covering a multitude of activities. By 1906, children James and Ethel had arrived, and at that point, William had a little wobble, as we might call it nowadays. at October, newspapers reported: “William George and accompanying him as far as Badminston, where he disappeared, asking them to wait a while. Reappearing, he said nothing, and went home with the witnesses. Eventually, confronted with more evidence, including a pile of feathers and a bag with 4 more dead chickens, William confessed: “Defendant pleaded guilty, and in a written statement said he fell into the hen coop, and being drunk could not resist the temptation and took the fowls, but he had no intention to steal. He would now give up the drink. – Superintendent Wakeford said defendant was discharged from the Garrison Artillery with a good character. There was nothing known against him. In view of this the Bench imposed a fine of £2 and 18s costs, or a month’s hard labour. – The money was paid”. Perhaps it was the wake-up call he needed. Another son, Henry, was born in 1907, who died tragically at 3 days old, then a daughter, Louisa, arrived in 1908. at same year, the family moved to Dock Cottages in Hythe – roughly where Sir Christopher Court now is, o St John’s Street. eir nal child, Harry, was born in 1912. William died in February 1916, aged only 41, and was buried in Fawley. His wife remarried a couple of years later; William and Louisa’s children went on to have families of their own, and some of their descendants still live in the area. defendant’s house, where two picked fowls were found.” William denied having seen the hens, claiming those two were his own, which he had plucked for “the missus”. Two witnesses admitted spending the evening with William in the Falcon Inn, Ware, a fish hawker, of Badminston, Fawley, was charged with stealing two hens and six chicken, value 18s, the property of Mr Hendy, farmer, of Badminston Farm. – Evidence was given showing that footprints and feathers were traced from Mr Hendy’s field to the Volunteers Needed for Community Cook Ups from Waterside Food Project Urgent Call to Action: Lucie, a local social entrepreneur, is leading the charge against food waste and she urgently needs your support to make it a resounding success. Every week, her dedicated team of volunteers comes together to prepare free, nourishing meals. eir mission is twofold: rescue surplus supermarket food from being wasted and nourish our neighbours in need. e entire operation is fuelled by passionate volunteers who are committed to enhancing the lives of others, particularly the elderly and vulnerable members of our community. We believe in the profound joy of sharing homemade meals and spending quality time connecting with one another. Right now, we are in desperate need of individuals who can dedicate their time to cooking, dishwashing, making tea, and food preparation. Initially, we’re seeking volunteers who can commit to just one day a week, and as our team grows, this commitment can be reduced to once a month. The crucial time slots are between 1.30pm and 5.30pm every Thursday afternoon. If you, or someone you know, is eager to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, we implore you to join our cause. Your support has the power to transform our community for the better. Please reach out via WhatsApp at: 07391 518272 or through email at: watercressqueen1@ gmail.com. Together, we can create a significant impact for the Waterside! Time is of the essence.
