The restored “loco” will join its sibling tractor unit, named “Gerald Yorke”, delivering the service that takes ferry passengers to and from the end of the pier. In recognition of the long-term support given to HPHA by the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation in the restoration of the train, the Board of HPHA has decided the restored unit will be named “Edward Fort” for the current Chairman and Founder of the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation. Edward S. Fort OBE founded the Fort Vale group of companies in 1967. Originally producing parts for the road tanker industry, Fort Vale has expanded to be a global engineering group. The Foundation was the first grantor to support the restoration of the train in early 2020 and further support has been given for the continued restoration of the carriages and of “Gerald Yorke”. HPHA, as part of its continuing plans to restore Hythe’s historic pier and iconic railway, put locomotive 16307 back on track a er an extensive and painstaking renovation carried out by volunteers from the Hythe Shed (at the Pier) and Blue Funnel Ferries engineers, using as much of the original material as possible in July 2022, in time for the centenary of the Hythe Pier Railway. It was named “Gerald Yorke” in honour of the railway engineer charged by Mr Percy to oversee the implementation of the pier train.
