It’s extremely floral, vibrantlycoloured, and probably the most photographed and romantic spot at Exbury Gardens – and this year celebrated its 60th birthday. Exbury Gardens’ Azalea Bowl, a rm visitor favourite that blossoms in April/May in a kaleidoscope of reds, shocking pinks, purples and whites, marked its 60th anniversary with a sparkling owering season, thanks to high rainfall and to date, no late harsh spring frosts. Planted in 1964 by former head gardener Freddie Wynniatt, under the guidance of then owner Edmund de Rothschild, it surrounds a large pond in the Gardens. It has witnessed numerous marriage proposals and its peak owering season is always keenly awaited by visitors. Head gardener Tom Clarke said: “The Azalea Bowl is such a magical place and when it’s in full bloom, it’s almost otherworldly. Very fitting that on its 60th anniversary, the plants are looking magnificent as we’ve had so much rain recently, with no late frosts.” During the rest of the year, the Azalea Bowl becomes a peaceful space in dappled shade where visitors can pause and re ect, and admire the tranquil beauty of the surrounding woodland landscape. With twenty Feature and Showcase Gardens, Beautiful Borders and College Competition Gardens to view, the Spring Fair’s panels of show assessors had a tough job on their hands. Assessing the spectacular Showcase and College Competition Gardens were multi awardwinning garden designers, Richard Barnard (Kings Oak Landscapes), Pippa Probert (BBC Two Your Garden Made Perfect, Outer Spaces Landscaping and Design) and Professor David Stevens. For the Beautiful Borders, assessors were Ian Hodgson, editor of Garden News, Anita Foy, the Hampshire-based garden designer, and Phil Tremayne, General Manager of the Association of Professional Landscapers. installed at the school as a permanent education and wellbeing space for students. Richard Barnard, assessment panel Chair, said: “This year’s show gardens are the best we’ve ever had at the Spring Fair, and The Inner Dancer garden was simply brilliant. So much thought has gone into it with a very exacting build. It’s a very comfortable space that feels safe, and I think it will work very well for the young people that use it.” On receiving his award, winner Matt Le Gassick, said: “I’m so proud of what our team has created. There’s so much innovation, thought, creativity and passion here, and I have great respect for the other teams. I never thought we’d win so I feel ecstatic and humbled at the same time! This garden will make such a difference to the children who will enjoy this special space.” e compact Beautiful Borders are a popular feature at all BBC Gardeners’ World events and provide achievable inspiration and exciting takehome ideas for small gardens and challenging spaces. ese imaginative 9m2 plots are always packed with interesting planting, materials and design features, designed this year to re ect the theme, ‘Share My Space’. Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award were presented to Southampton-based garden designers Andrew Williamson and Laura Hall for Together. e design was inspired by the warm, welcoming and supportive space provided for people a ected by cancer at Maggie’s Southampton, and featured two simple block benches set amongst a woodland-style glade with so , calming colours and textures. Ian Hodgson, Assessment panel Chair, said: “The standard of Borders at the Spring Fair gets higher each year, with real innovation and creativity underpinned Best Showcase Garden and a Platinum award were presented to award-winning landscape designer Matt Le Gassick, founder of Inbud, for e Inner Dancer. Reviewing all Award entries at the Spring Fair, BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Frances Tophill, said: “There were so many memorable gardens at the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair this year. The award assessors have had a really tough job on their hands and I’m absolutely delighted for all the brilliant winners. Whether you’re a first-time gardener or a seasoned grower, it’s pretty much impossible to spend a day at the Spring Fair at Beaulieu without taking home an armful of new plants, a head full of exciting ideas to try, and some expert tips and advice. These wonderful, awardwinning Showcase Gardens and Beautiful Borders are a credit to the teams behind them and are sure to inspire visitors.” Headline sponsor, Hillier, created a naturalistic woodland-themed feature garden, designed to complement the Spring Fair’s New Forest setting and inspire visitors to create their own pockets of woodland at home. Highlights include bark paths, subtle shade-friendly planting including natural woodland plants like Hellebores, Ferns, Foxgloves and Primroses, long grassy borders and a canopy of large semi-mature trees. Lord Montagu of Beaulieu said: “It is always a pleasure to see this event gracing the Beaulieu Parkland, signalling, as it does, the start of spring. In common with our visitors, I find a lot to interest me in the stands and displays, and enjoy seeing what the exhibitors have lined up for us.” For more information on this year’s winners please visit: www.bbcgardenersworldfair.com Continued from page 4 Together - winner of Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award All are welcome to go along to Jubilee Hall in Fawley on Fridays, 10am to 12noon, for the Waterside Foodbank’s weekly drop-in. A er three hours work and two full car loads of greenery, the full width of the foot path had been uncovered and a less obstructive view, for drivers, had been achieved. It was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019. e two local watch stations are NCI Calshot Tower, located on Calshot Spit, one of the busiest coastal sea locations, and its satellite station, NCI Stone Point which views Lepe Spit. ey have 140 volunteers who between them ensure a watch is kept at both stations 364 days a year. Any Watchkeeper on duty at NCI Calshot needs to be particularly dedicated because the tower is 30 meters high and the viewing platform has to be accessed by 82 steps on a very steep staircase. is is a strenuous challenge for any volunteer, whatever their age or physical fitness. NCI Calshot’s safety o cer, Bob Rich, had wanted every watchkeeper to receive training so that, in the event of a cardiac emergency, they knew how to use the de brillator housed in the tower. Planning a training event for so many watchkeepers was challenging but, thanks to the generosity of Dibden Purlieu Scout Group, who gave use of their hut without charge, the event nally came together, on 18th April. 40 volunteers from both local watches took part in an intensive 3 hour training programme given by paramedic David Williamson and his team of trainers from Meon Valley Heartstart. ey received detailed instruction on how to recognise and respond to cardiac arrest and were able to practice CPR and use a training de brillator on resuscitation dummies. ey reported that the training exceeded their expectations and ended the a ernoon completely con dent to use a de brillator in a cardiac emergency, especially at the top of Calshot Tower! Meon Valley Heart Start, who gave the training, is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. eir highly quali ed trainers come from a range of medical backgrounds and give their spare time to provide free training wherever it is needed throughout the county. ey make no charge for their service but rely on donations towards their running costs. New Forest Rotary club have worked closely with the team since setting up their ‘De brillators in Action’ initiative 2 ½ years ago. During this time the club has sponsored them to provide free training for a number of local communities throughout the New Forest. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to accommodate local NCI Watchkeepers within their usual community events but they were particularly pleased to be able to sponsor the event arranged by Bob Rich. It was a rst for them to be able to facilitate training for such a large group from a single organisation. e event was also the rst in an initiative to work in conjunction with Hythe and Waterside Rotary Club to extend free training into the Waterside area. e clubs were delighted to make a joint donation of £200 to Meon Valley Heartstart towards the training. It was an excellent example of how local voluntary organisations were able to work together to provide essential training for a special group of volunteers which could help them even further in their commitment to save lives.
