Plant growing and buying costs was also supported by these donations. e show garden aimed to help change perceptions in society towards people with learning disabilities. Many still feel socially le out and face stigma and discrimination in their everyday lives (Scior & Werner, 2015). Gardening can play a role in giving people purpose in their life and a chance to show what they can achieve. e garden was inspired by a small waterfall area next to Furzey’s popular lake area and features plants for which the woodland garden is renowned for such as an acer Palmatum, hosta’s and salvia’s. Local artist Shaun Stevens created an artist’s impression of the garden, which is named ‘Re ective waters of inclusivity’. Special personal touches from the Minstead Trust community were added, including pebbles made from reclaimed clay dug out from beneath a fallen oak tree on Minstead Trusts’ grounds. ese pebbles were not just decorative; they carried the initials of the people supported by Minstead Trust, as well as sta and volunteers. Additionally, bringing character to the garden were two fairy doors, some felt butter ies and frogs made by people with learning disabilities. Supported gardener Simon said: “I told people about the plants. I love a garden, I think the garden is pretty.” Supported gardener Rhianne said: “I enjoyed telling everyone about the garden and the plants from Furzey. Seeing what people think of it and telling people what we do and what we like doing. I think that the garden is beautiful.” John Davies, Minstead Trust senior instructor, said: Local Gardeners with Learning Disabilities Celebrate Triumph at World’s Largest Garden Festival on, a chance for them to show what they can do if given opportunities that are usually not available to them. Many of them have been through really hard times in their lives and they have loved standing at the show and feeling really proud of what they have achieved. I hope people will continue to support us so that we can change some minds around what people with learning disabilities can do if given a chance.” Find out more about the garden at www. minsteadtrust.org.uk/ hamptongarden “This was a really exciting challenge the guys took Continued from front page Fairy Door made from Cedar

A record breaking high tide in April ooded the ground oor by more than a metre but the Club was up and running on a skeleton basis within a month. A full refurbishment is now complete, enabling the outstanding Gins Team to o er a full Menu and complete waterside facilities. Back in 1964, Edward, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, a very notable Member, enabled the Club, founded in 1875, to build ‘Gins’ midway between the Beaulieu River entrance and Buckler’s Hard. e site is where medieval monks used gins, a derrick or crane, to load and unload produce for nearby St Leonards Grange. At that time, the Royal Southampton’s Clubhouse was land-locked on Northlands Road in Southampton. So, in contrast, waterside access in probably the most beautiful location in e Solent, o ering views from Exbury to Cowes and Gurnard, provided Members with the ultimate combination of sailing and hospitality with a Pontoon and Bosun service available to Members and visiting yachts. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the Club’s facilities today and can book a berth, lunch and dinner or can access the club by car. e Club can also cater for special events. e Club Launch can be contacted on VHF Channel 77 call sign “SEA ECHO”. Club Commodore Guy Darby commented “The video showing the power of the sea, a foot higher than the bank, inundating the Club and the fields towards St Leonards was frankly awesome. The Committee is hugely grateful to our Business Manager, Stuart, his team and key Members, for bringing the Club back to full operation in time for the Gins Diamond Jubilee. Sitting on the balcony at Gins with Chef Albin’s superb food and a fine glass of wine, enjoying panoramic views of the Beaulieu River and the Isle of Wight simply cannot be beaten, and combined with a full range of sailing, cruising and social activities, we look forward to welcoming Members and visitors alike!” For more information, contact RSYC Business Manager Stuart Earp on: 023 8022 3352 or email: businessmanager@rsyc.org.uk What 3 Words: shuttered.cages.tolerable Gins to Celebrate Diamond Jubilee RSYC Gins Balcony Great Waterside Raft Race e 2024 Great Waterside Ra Race raising funds for the RNLI is taking place in Hythe Marina on Sunday 4th August. Frustrated by the rising cost of new fabric and the amount we throw away of usable material, Langdown local Natalie Haigh, decided to try a new initiative to take some of these waste textiles, and upcycle them into new items for sale. Waterside Cra Club and Tenovus Charity Shop on Hythe High Street teamed up to try making new items from clothing, rejected from the charity shop and destined to become rags. e cra club ran 2, 2 hour sessions earlier this year where they were armed with sewing machines, crochet hooks, knitting needles and glue guns. Tenovus donated the team of 35 women, 6 huge bags of discarded clothing, some of it damaged, out of shape or stained. If sold to the ‘rag man’ the charity would have received around £7 for this amount, as they are paid by the kg. A er 4 hours of working on the project during the sessions and some women taking items home, each new item was created, labelled and sent back to the charity shop for re-sale. Bertie, the Manager at Tenovus, Hythe, created a beautiful window display of all the items alongside a poster explaining what the project was about. A er a few weeks of sales, they heard that the shop had made around £360 pro t from all the items sold, with a further £40 made from the items at another Tenovus location, over what they would have got from the material in its previous state. e new items ranged from fabric covered bottles, crocheted bags, hats and gloves, fabric covered door stops, clothing items, door hanging pockets, cot covers and someone even converted a down jacket into a cool looking messenger bag. Beyond the fact that we’d saved a signi cant amount of fabric from ragging or land ll and helped the charity make more money, all those involved in the project had fun and gained a real sense of achievement. Because the charity created the shop window, and many of the women were local, it was so lovely to feel the real sense of community in the high street as we gathered to see whether the item we had made was in the window or had been sold. Waterside Cra Club will be continuing this project during the summer holidays if anyone is interested, please pop along to one of their sessions, Thursday afternoons at Hythe Sea Scouts Hut, Shore Road, from 12.30pm until 3pm. Fine weather and other events in the area encouraged people out. Well over a hundred people each day went to see the progress made in developing the Heritage Centre into a study centre. Visitors enjoyed a rolling slide show of historic photographs of the Waterside as well as static displays showing the old Railway Station, the bomb damage at All Saint’s Church (together with an illuminated fragment of the old stained glass from the church), Football on the Mud, as well as historic views of Marchwood and Fawley. A highlight this year was an interactive screen display of maps interspersed with aerial photographs of the same area. e marvels of modern technology allowed zoom views of selected parts of the maps. ere was also a display arranged by one of the volunteers, Bryan Norman, of a large scale map of the old Hollybank Golf Course. Visitors were shown the progress the Centre is making in digitising their archives. Another highlight was when one of their Life Members, Sir Julian Lewis MP, took a break from canvassing to spend an hour chatting to the volunteers. Several new members signed up at the weekend and took advantage of the o ers available on the books. In addition, several individuals have o ered their services as volunteers. However, with the holiday season now upon us, they may not be able to continue to open from 10am – 12noon on all Tuesdays, ursdays and Saturdays, so if you want to visit to see what the Centre is doing and help with your research into house or family, Tuesdays will be the best bet until the holiday season is over. Steve operates a silver VW Caddy, licensed by NFDC to carry up to six passengers or 1 passenger and one wheelchair user. Top Flight Private Hire began in 2014 when Steve decided to set up his own business a er working for many years with local taxi companies. Back then he was operating a Mercedes E Class and was kept particularly busy driving customers to airports, cruise ships, and private functions. at all changed in 2020 with the Covid outbreak when, what with lockdowns and restrictions on travel, work dried up for a very long time. Needing to bring in an income, and utilising his professional driving skills, Steve was fortunate to land a temporary position with ames Valley Police as a Radio Frequency Surveyor, requiring him to drive an unmarked police car down almost every road in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and the ames Valley area, clocking up some 130,000 miles. With the work complete, Steve has returned to licensed travel. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the police but it is now time to come back to what I started ten years ago,” he said. He’s already connected with many regular customers and, naturally, is looking to serve new ones across the Waterside. Top Flight Private Hire is the ideal choice for Southampton cruise terminals, Southampton and Bournemouth airport transfers, and any other local trips where reliability and professionalism are a must. But not all of it feels like a step forward. Keyless entry is one such example, meaning that as long as your key fob is in your pocket the car can detect that you’re in close proximity. It will unlock, and even start at a press of a button. In principle, an amazing idea. Except, it’s proved a bonanza for car thieves. You arrive home, park your car, and set your keys down inside the house in their usual place. is presents two immediate problems. If you’re parking your car close to the house then the key may be close enough that the car isn’t in fact locked at all. As far as the car is concerned, you’re nearby, so it’s ready and waiting for you. But even if the car is a safe distance away, the key fob is still transmitting. Typically, that’s far enough to reach your front door. Car thieves can use a signal capture device to stand outside your house, then replay that signal beside your car to unlock and start it. Car the s have sky-rocketed using these techniques. But there is a very simple solution – a Faraday pouch. ese anti-the bags block the signal from the key fob while the key is inside, stopping car thieves in their tracks. And they’re a ordable too – certainly when compared to the hassle and expense of replacing your vehicle. If you want to know more, do get in touch. I’m here to help, from keys locked in your car or lost altogether to car remote repairs and spare keys cut. Talk to KlicKey.
