When buying owers, if not from the garden, buy the best quality possible from an inside, temperature controlled environment - the owers will be less stressed and last longer. Don’t buy in tight buds, they may not open. Consider your design, textures, shapes and space between owers. Once home recut stems on a slant, remove foliage that will be below the waterline and “condition” in water containing ower food – sachets can be bought or will come attached to stems. Decide on the mechanics you use. Firstly ensure the base is stable, you may require weights e.g. stones, bricks etc, depending on the size of the container. We try to keep oral foam use for special occasions. Foam free options are: chicken wire (carefully folded to avoid sharp edges and to give space for stems); tape across a container to create a grid e ect; “vase buddy” - silicone mesh; stones-clean, ll container; hand ties; multiple small containers in a large one; wire skeletons; pin holders/ oral frogs secured with oral x to a dry container; glass/plastic “frog” - round block with stem holes; spring arrangers – o en style will use lots of garden foliage: modern designs are around the ower size, shape and colour. Depth is achieved by recessing owers and foliage. Flowers at di erent heights and angles give interest. Grouping owers achieves impact, especially if one type. We hope these tips are helpful and that you can enjoy experimenting with the colours of autumn – remember that practice makes perfect! Next meetings: 3rd October: In House Bring & Do - Autumn Designs, 7th November: Presentation - Tales of Downton Abbey by Brenda Dossett and 5th December: Demonstration - Christmas by Lucinda Knapman. Everyone is welcome! All meetings at Copythorne Parish Hall. For more information please contact Debbie orne on: 07769 830752. plastic coated; twig balls; aluminium flat wire tangles. A er using, clean devices thoroughly to avoid bacterial contamination. When designing your arrangement, consider incorporating: scale, proportion, balance, harmony, rhythm and ow. Simplicity is key - less is more. Consider the outline and make the flowers approximately twice the container height. Choose owers and foliage to achieve your desired look e.g. open country Example flower arrangements
