Pulling o the main Lyndhurst road and down a small hill life becomes peaceful again, a re ection of times gone by one might say. Nothing has ever much changed in the Shire – Life goes on much as it always has. People walking dogs, chatting in front gardens, sharing a glass of wine in the evenings. Friends visiting would o en remark how quiet it was in the neighbourhood. It was like my favourite book “ e Hobbit” and although we live in bungalows and not in Holes in the ground there is much in common. en one day my world was violently attacked – Unannounced the Orcs came in the night. Crashing in through the windows and the front door. Destroying our home, they carried the words Cancer on their shields and swords. Aggressive Prostate Cancer, and so began my journey into a di erent future. I was not even retired when they came calling at my door. e nights of being awake at 3am in the morning, shedding copious tears that could honestly ll a bucket, being told of horrible invasive treatments, scans, biopsies and regular trips to the hospital. My world blown apart. So now I have a treatment plan, but it is so far from ideal, I would not wish it on anyone, not even my worst enemy as they say. I alternate between tears and rage. ere is a simple blood test called a PSA test. Whilst it is not 100% accurate, in my case it was accurate. However, you have to ask for it at my Doctors Surgery or you don’t get it! Unfortunately, I was tested far too late, hence a life expectancy of sub ten years as the consultant put it. Why am I writing this for a community magazine you may ask? Well from the O ce of National Statistics there are 670 men over 50 living in Ashurst, of them roughly 1 in 8 will develop Prostate Cancer. at’s 85 Men. I am writing this article for these men, their wives, their partners, their grandchildren in the hope that they can receive an early intervention and a cure. Or depending on the persons age and the cancers type it may not be aggressive and can just be regularly monitored going forward. (Early treatments are much less harsh). Guys if you are over 50, I beg you go to your GP and ask for a PSA Test. Please don’t leave it to your GP – ey may never contact you. I had a check-up at 65 – It was not even mentioned. For me it came much too late – Ladies if he won’t see a doctor – Please book it for him. It might save his life.
