A new cub has joined the smooth-coated otter family at New Forest Wildlife Park and is causing quite a stir. Born on 10th November to parents Soriah (aged 10) and Song (aged 12), the mischievous cub has been named Banhhea which means “trouble” in Khmer. Banhhea is the third cub for mum Soriah and dad Song, joining older siblings Anupa and Ananda who were born in 2018. e older siblings have been keeping a watchful eye on their little brother. “Banhhea is a very feisty cub,” said Senior Keeper, Lizzy. “He is already exploring his surroundings and causing mischief wherever he goes, hence his fitting name!” During his 6-week check-up, Banhhea received a clean bill of health from the wildlife park’s veterinarian. He was also microchipped (which he didn’t appreciate!) to ensure accurate identi cation in the future. e birth of Banhhea is a signi cant event for New Forest Wildlife Park and the conservation of smooth-coated otters. ese charismatic animals, native to South-east Asia, are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with their population having declined by 30% in the last 30 years. e main threats to smooth-coated otters are habitat loss, water pollution, and illegal trapping for the wildlife and fur trade. If current trends continue, it is predicted that another 30% could be lost over the next 30 years. New Forest Wildlife Park is committed to the conservation of smoothcoated otters to help ensure the survival of this vulnerable species. At 10 weeks old, Banhhea is spending more time coming out of the family’s indoor holt and exploring the outdoor enclosure. Visitors to the wildlife park can observe Banhhea, his antics, and his family whilst learning more about conservation and how to support the e orts to protect these animals. Locals started the Riding Club with many local families involved including, the Ralphs, Skivingtons, Tillmans and Bakers. e Club has always been run by volunteers with any pro ts being ploughed back into the Club for jumps and other equipment. e Club has strived to keep its annual subscription and entry fees as cheap as possible, they pride themselves on being a club that o ers something for every age and ability to enjoy. When the Farm had new tenants, Mopley Riding Club used Fawley Common as a base but Cadland Estate kindly let the Club use a eld on the road to Calshot. e opportunity to return back to Mopley Farm was o ered by Cadland Estate, with the Club returning to the Farm in March last year, giving the Riding Club use of a sand school for training and events. Since returning to the Farm, the Club has had to rebuild fencing and renovate the sand school; they have also managed to build a small cross country course through the woods. To help raise funds to enable these works, the Club set up a Just Giving page which received a massive amount of support, they also held a quiz night and a local pub donated the pro ts to the Club from its quiz night. e Club runs at least one event every month, o ering a range of jumping days, schooling sessions, quiz rides, fun activity events, summer day camps for children and adults, an annual show, Halloween capers and then culminates with a Christmas Ride event. Mrs Gilly Drummond is the Club’s President and has Nadia, Milo and Esme, Mopley Riding Club to ride through the private grounds of the Estate for the 2024 Christmas Ride, as they had done for their 50th Anniversary. Held as a charity fundraiser, the Christmas Ride also raised £700 for Hampshire Search and Rescue, who came to the aid of a member’s father who went missing locally in the summer. Continuing with the charity fundraising, they will also be raising funds for Oakhaven Hospice with a quiz night later this year. Mopley Riding Club is about having fun in the fresh air and making friends and so long may it continue. Tesco Stronger Starts at Oak Lodge rough your blue token donations in your local Tesco, UKHarvest has received a nancial donation to deliver an outstanding education course at Oak Lodge School in Dibden Purlieu. Fighting food waste is top of everyone’s agenda and UKHarvest’s educational o ering will support students to learn how we can all do more in our homes, to prevent healthy food from going to waste. e incredible donation through Tesco Stronger Starts, thanks to your blue token donation in store has allowed UKHarvest to deliver in person or online educational sessions, lesson plans, teacher support, ingredients and donated equipment such as air-fryers and slow cookers. To boost funds for extra food and activity equipment, Tesco is introducing a £5m grant programme, in partnership with Groundwork UK, Tesco Stronger Starts (TSS) (tescostrongerstarts.org.uk) to give children across the UK a stronger start in life. e grants will help schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing. Currently operating in Dibden Purlieu, UKHarvest are working with Oak Lodge School who will receive the carefully designed educational material along with all the additional resources, food and equipment. Claire de Silva, Tesco UK Head of Communities and Local Media, said: “Helping schools and children’s groups access the food and resources they need is vitally important in getting children a stronger start in life. Children with enough food have more energy, better concentration, and ultimately achieve more too.” Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said: “As a community charity, we have seen first-hand how schools and other groups supporting young people have been playing a much bigger role in ensuring children are getting a healthy start to the day and getting access to spaces and services to support physical activity and mental health. Family budgets are tight and school budgets are tight, but it’s so important that children stay fed, fit and focused, so we’re delighted to be able to prioritise these activities alongside Tesco with the Stronger Starts programme.” Simon Thresher, Operations and Compliance Manager at UKHarvest shared that “The work UKHarvest has been able to do, thanks to the ongoing Tesco funding, has allowed our education programme to develop into the impactful resource it is today. Reaching more households around the country, the TSS initiative will allow students across the country to access support material giving them the skills they need to help reduce the ongoing challenges of food waste in the UK. We are grateful to be part of the programme.”

Allan will be greatly missed by so many in our community, his enthusiasm gained him a coveted Community Spirit Award in 2023 following his regular support for Rock the Pier. e natural response might be to feel sad and perhaps be tearful at the death of this community icon. However for anyone who knew Allan, this was not his way. Laughter and enjoyment and a celebration of life coupled with his favourite phrase “Just get on and do it” would be much more appropriate. Hence all his friends and colleagues at the Hythe Shed would say to everyone who knew Allan, rather than sadness and tears, let us remember him with laughter, maybe raise a glass, and celebrate the life of this amazing man and remember what he brought to the lives of so many members of the Hythe community. He will never be forgotten, not least for steering Hythe Shed to be No. 2 in the United Kingdom Men’s Shed awards this year at the House of Commons. We will keep his memory alive as the Shed continues all the community work and projects he instigated. Uncle Chris’s Collection of Cra y Short Stories and Uncle Chris’s Second Collection of Cra y Short Stories are available on Amazon and Ebook, with all pro ts going to Ukraine via the charity World Vision.
