From the Hampshire Chronicle on 5th June, we nd, rst of all, an inn for sale: “To be SOLD by AUCTION, at the Carpenter’s Arms Inn at Fawley, on Thursday the 14th Day of June, 1775, the said INN, being a wellaccustomed House, with Stable, Outhouse, and Garden, thereto belonging, and two Plots of Pasture Ground, a little Distance therefrom, held by Lease, of which there are about 900 Years to come, at a Pepper Corn Rent”. Another auction followed, on 12th June: “… at the House of Mrs. BULL, bearing the Sign of the Montague Arms, at Hythe, the following Articles, in different Lots: Lot 1: Fifty Trees of Ash Timber, lying and being in the Parish of Fawley. Lot 2: A good Sail Boat, with all her Materials, Burthen about 10 Tons, built in Southampton River, 1773, now lying off Hythe. Lot 3: Three small Boats, two Wherries and one Skiff. Lot 4: A Travelling Stage or Carriage, in good Condition, the late Property of Mr. James Bull, Surgeon, deceas’d, well calculated for a person in the travelling Sphere”. On 3rd July, a remarkable tragedy occurred: “Yesterday, during the storm, a cow was struck dead by lightning, at Fawley in the New Forest”. e following week, on the 10th, a public notice: “WHEREAS some evil-minded Person or Persons did, on Sunday the second of this instant, July, or in the Night between that Day and the next, break open the uninhabited House lately built by Mr. BALLARD, at Fawley, in the County of Southampton, and did steal out of the same several Workmens Tools:- Whoever will give Information on the Offender or Offenders, shall, upon his or their Conviction, receive a Reward of Five Guineas, to be paid by Mr. BALLARD of Southampton”. On 23rd October, the weather was again the focus of attention: “During the violent storm on Thursday evening last we hear, that at Hardley, in the parish of Fawley, several large elm trees were blown down, (one of which, falling on a barn, beat it down, another falling on a waggon belonging to Farmer Wyatt, broke it to pieces); two large walnut trees and several apple trees were likewise blown down in the same parish; from its violence in those parts we fear considerable damage has been done, but nothing more has transpired”. Finally, from 25th December, the sad tale of a thwarted marriage: “An eminent Miller of Fawley, in the New Forest, was yesterday going to be married to an agreeable young lady of Bewley, possessed of a genteel fortune; but when they appeared at church, the Clergyman, on examining the intended bridegroom, discovered they were very nearly related, and would not perform the ceremony, from which circumstance, they were obliged to return to their respective homes, to the great disappointment of both parties”. Perhaps it’s as well the unfortunate pair were not named. Published in December, ‘Digging deeper: more Waterside stories’ is the follow-up to Robin Somes’ 2023 book, ‘Digging up the past: A collection of Waterside stories’, featuring articles rst published in e Herald.
