As he entered the property, I could see from his face that he was not going to give me good news. e space at the bottom of the stairs where the front door opens was too small. We would rst need to get a new front door that opened outwards so we could accommodate the li . Obviously, that would take time that we didn’t have; he could see I was distressed and decided to measure up and give me an order that I could place as soon as I could get the door changed. I phoned a friend who I knew would have contacts. en, I called Jerry Still Installations and spoke to Lewis, who said he would come straight round. We had our windows tted by them about ve years ago. True to his word, he came round and said he could turn the door around so it opened outwards. He mentioned it was unlikely to t properly and that we would need to replace it with a new door and frame. When I asked when they could do it, he said someone would be there the following morning. Ten minutes later, Lewis rang me back to say Paul was on his way round to do the job straight away while the Stannah surveyor was still with me. Two hours later, a er some adjustments were made, our front door was opening outwards! While not a perfect t, it works and keeps us secure. e order for Stannah had been placed and a new front door was on order; my wife will be able to come home now. In this world of uncertainties, Bell’s Furniture kindly answered all my what-ifs so I could make a plan for our situation. Waterside Furnishings also agreed to take any furniture we may need disposed of in order to make space for a hospital bed. Rosie, Macmillan care worker from Hythe CAB helped ll in all forms necessary for obtaining disabled parking cards and attendance allowances. The high-dependency respiratory unit sta at Southampton General Hospital have been wonderful in caring for my wife during this time. Southampton General’s radiotherapy units have supported me throughout my treatment, their kindness has meant so much during these challenging times. e African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” comes vividly into my mind when re ecting on all of this support we’ve received.
