One of our oldest local buildings is turning 485 years old this year. Calshot Castle, located at the end of Calshot Spit, was built on the orders of King Henry VIII to help protect the lucrative trading port of Southampton and the Solent area from invading forces. By 1538, King Henry feared an invasion of England from the Holy Roman Empire and moved quickly to fortify the Southern and Eastern shores of England. To help speed up the building process stone was used from the then recently demolished abbeys. Beaulieu Abbey and Netley Abbey stone was used to build Calshot Castle. Over the next 485 years Calshot Castle has fallen in and out of use, but never to the extent of total neglect. ere have been numerous occasions when the fort has been required to defend Southampton Water, the most recent was during the Second World War when it was part of RAF Calshot. e castle had two anti-aircra guns on the roof along with large search lights in the sea facing part of the curtain wall. e role of the castle was threefold: i) to act as the communication hub for the RAF Station; ii) for air tra c control; iii) to help direct shipping within the Solent and Southampton Water. e Castle played a vital role with preparations for the D-Day Landings. It communicated with the ships needing to travel up Southampton Water to collect supplies. e Solent was full of ships waiting for orders. It is said that the Solent was so crowded with ships that people felt they could have walked to the Isle of Wight! roughout the war, Southampton Calshot Castle Continued on page 3

On Wednesday 2nd April, over 2,000 people visited Oakhaven Hospice’s new Home & Cra charity shop in Lymington - and the store smashed all previous sales records for Oakhaven’s High Street shops! An excited queue stretched down the length of St omas Street of locals and visitors to Lymington eager to be amongst the rst to set foot in Oakhaven’s new charity shop - and eager to meet BBC TV’s ‘Teddy Bear Ladies’ and Southampton footballing legend Matt Le Tissier! At 10am, Oakhaven’s Chief Executive Andrew Ryde, thanked everyone involved with the new charity shop before handing over to e Repair Shop’s Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch to cut the ribbon and open the Home & Cra Shop. e new shop attracted many locals and also many visitors to the area, who declared they would be bringing friends and relatives to Lymington very soon. Gary Taylor, Oakhaven’s Head of Retail, said: “We would like to thank everyone who came to support us on the day and everyone involved in the twoyear preparation of this long-anticipated new shop, including our landlord and everyone who has donated items for us to sell. It was a long road, but what a day! highly anticipated since the closure two years ago of the charity’s ‘pop-up’ cra shop. Oakhaven Hospice’s ninth charity shop joins the Furniture, Children’s, Fashion and Designer Fashion Shops in Lymington, along with those in Totton, New Milton and two shops in Hythe. Each is an Aladdin’s cave lled with real treasures and the ultimate in recycling and sustainable shopping. e Home & Cra shop stocks a wide range of haberdashery, fabrics, cra ing materials, children’s cra s, books and games, as well as kitchenware, dining ware, electrical goods and other homeware. e new shop is highly accessible, with a ramp leading into the shop and space between aisles for mobility. Amanda Middleditch of e Teddy Bear Ladies, said: “It’s great to have somewhere like this where you can come and swap crafting materials. You can bring your things in and then take on something new. I think it’s a really good way of encouraging particularly young people to start crafting because it’s a bit more affordable, or they can pick up something someone’s already started but they haven’t finished and maybe have a go and not feel they’ve spent a fortune if they don’t like it.” Andrew Ryde, Chief Executive, said: “As a charity, only 11% of Oakhaven’s costs are covered by the NHS. Our shops provide an important income stream for the charity, and we are delighted by the warm welcome that has been given to our new Home & Craft Shop. Thank you to everyone who donates items for us to A special thanks to all the amazing team of staff and volunteers who have helped with the shop, thank you for your loyalty, resilience and incredible hard work. One thing that I have learned about crafters is that they are resourceful - if you need to solve a problem, seek out a crafter! We’re delighted that the new shop’s turnover on Wednesday was over ten times higher than an average day, smashing all previous daily records ever held in any of our High Street shops!” e Lymington Home & Cra Shop, at 27a St omas Street, has been The Teddy Bear Ladies, Matt Le Tissier and the Lymington Mayor cut the ribbon to open the new shop Continued on page 5

Named Edward Fort, a er chairman of the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation in recognition of the charity’s contribution to HPHA funding, 16302 was built in 1917 for service in a WWI munitions factory. Both of the current locomotives arrived in Hythe in 1920 and entered service on Hythe Pier in 1922. e restoration of Edward Fort that started over two and a half years ago turned out to almost being a complete rebuild, and has been a painstaking but rewarding project. Many of the components, right down to the nuts and bolt, have had to be specially manufactured, nothing o the shelf. A worldwide search failed to locate a cog that was specially manufactured by a Southampton engineering company with further work by Gill of Lymington. Gerald Yorke, 16307, has single-handedly maintained the daily service along the 640 metres Hythe Pier during the restoration of Edward Fort, almost without issue; a tribute to both the constructor’s quality of workmanship and the maintenance carried out by HPHA and Hythe Shed volunteers and the engineering team at the ferry. e Hythe Shed volunteers are particularly thanked for their e orts in the rustproo ng and painting of Edward Fort. LJFC is a small grassroots village club with a big heart, run by volunteers to provide top quality football training for children and adolescents. e Club are looking for sponsorship for their youth teams to help provide new kit and equipment for them ready for the 2025/26 season. All parents/guardians pay a signing-on fee for their children to participate in the youth football teams, which goes towards equipment, their winter training facility and league fees - just to name a few. Sadly it doesn’t cover everything and all youth football clubs rely on donations, fundraising and sponsorship to keep everything running. Football kit sponsorship is a big thing for youth teams. Kitting out an entire team costs a lot of money. Any business that sponsors a kit, will have their logo printed on the kit, advertising the business at every home and away xture. If your business is in a position to provide sponsorship for Lyndhurst Juniors Youth Football Club they’d love to hear from you. Lyndhurst Juniors U15 was a brand new team for the 2024/25 season; made up of 14-15 year old boys (no girls expressed an interest in the team). Training started well, but unfortunately numbers began to dwindle with the team almost folding, but thanks to a league restructure and the recruitment of additional players they managed to get a team together for their rst season. Despite su ering injuries, player availability and never having a full squad at any match, they’ve also had huge success and on Saturday 29th March they o cially won their division league! Next season, they’ll be promoted along with the team that nishes in second place. Sarah Coulson, U15 Team Manager comments: “This is a huge achievement for a brand new team. First to take the stage was Over the Rainbow, NFAD’s Lower School show, held at Brockenhurst Village Hall on Sunday 16th March. For many of the young performers - aged between 2 and 9 - it was their very rst time on stage. e show was a joyful celebration of early dance, lled with handmade costumes, rainbow magic, and proud families cheering from the audience. Across two 60-minute performances, 90 children danced their hearts out in styles including ballet, modern, and musical theatre, supported every step of the way by teachers, helpers, and older students. e format, which includes dress rehearsal and shows on the same day, o ers a fun, immersive experience designed to build confidence and create lasting memories. Two weeks later, NFAD’s Upper School students (ages 9+) graced the stage at the same venue for A Tin Man’s Tale - a brandnew, original production inspired by Principal Kayleigh Sargeant’s tenyear (tin) anniversary leading the school. is imaginative retelling of the Tin Man’s journey through Oz combined storytelling, dance, and drama to explore themes of self-discovery, courage, and staying true to yourself. With a 17-page script, 25 original numbers across six dance disciplines - including ballet, tap, modern, contemporary, street, and musical theatre - over 80 performers and nearly 200 costumes, production. Following twelve weeks of rehearsals, the result was a polished, high-energy performance delivered with heart and pride. “We stage full-scale shows every two years because of the sheer scale of the planning and preparation involved,” said Principal Kayleigh Sargeant. “From the students and teachers to the backstage crew, every single person pours their heart into making these shows something truly special. It’s a true labour of love, and worth every minute!” Four highly quali ed dance teachers, over 90 volunteer matrons and 16 backstage crew supported the two productions, managing class groups, quick changes, and costume logistics - alongside a full lighting and sound team, photographers, and videographers. For many students, the shows are the highlight of their dance journey so far. For families, they o er a chance to witness the commitment, discipline, and joy that goes into every class. is year also marked a proud milestone for NFAD: student Quinn Chapman became the school’s rst pupil to gain a place at the prestigious Royal Ballet School’s White Lodge, having rst discovered a love of dance through NFAD’s local ballet, tap, and modern classes. e school, which has grown from 147 students to over 300 since Kayleigh Sargeant took over a decade ago in 2014, continues to thrive as a cornerstone of the New Forest’s dance and performing arts community. With classes for everyone aged 2 to 80, NFAD fosters not only high-quality dance training but also meaningful community connection - through adult programmes, charity partnerships, and regular involvement in local events. NFAD’s new motto, launched alongside this year’s productions, perfectly sums up the spirit of the season: Proud to be NFAD. Feeling inspired? Discover the full range of dance styles on o er at NFAD by visiting www.newforestdance.co.uk – classes are available for all ages and abilities. it was NFAD’s most ambitious production to date. The scale and attention to detail were exceptional: hundreds of metres of handsewn tulle and thousands of sequins were used in the circa 200 costumes, adding extra sparkle to the already vibrant (Photo credit: NFAD)
