Letters were included from men ghting overseas, together with well-known war poems, ‘Lindy-Hop’ dancing, moving new songs and of course, some old favourites including ‘White Cli s of Dover’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again’. Audience members were clearly touched by the experience. One shared, “It was a performance of the highest standard - very impressive and just what this area needs.” Another commented, “It was so moving, thank you for bringing it to Totton. Please tell the actors it was just wonderful!” e evening served as a poignant tribute to those who lived through the war and a celebration of community spirit, remembrance, and shared history. By popular demand, the show will be repeated, this time in Hythe on 28th June. For more information about this and other upcoming events supported by Culture in Common, please visit: www.cultureincommon. co.uk VE Day celebrations in Totton VE Day Celebrations by Patricia Hedley-Goddard Despite the Government not supporting a national celebration, local groups and authorities rose to this one-off memorable occasion to remember the joy of a war free Britain. Fawley Parish Council hosted a celebration luncheon held at the Jubilee Hall in Fawley. e lunch was a ‘sell-out’ and a very happy occasion. The attendees were greeted with a ‘welcome’ glass of sherry on arrival, followed by a Fish and Chips lunch (the only food NOT rationed by Sir Winston Churchill), followed by homemade cakes and copious cups of tea. e New Forest Brass Band played VE Day period music, including a vocalist singing some of the well-known songs from that era. Sir Julian Lewis, our local MP, attended, as well as representatives from various council roles in Hampshire. In the evening Alan Alvey, Chairman of the Fawley Parish Council, lit a beacon at Gang Warily, and the crowd was entertained by e Jingle Ladies singing songs from the 1940’s. On the following Saturday (10th May) Lepe Country Park restaurant o ered a special VE Day lunch of Fish and Chips, followed by Jam Roly Poly and Custard. e previous Sunday the Royal British Legion at Black eld had hosted a VE luncheon and a ernoon entertainment with music and singing. Each table had been supplied with union ags, so there was much jollity and ag waving. Marc Heighway had provided a display portraying aircra which ew from the air elds in the New Forest. e D-Day Lepe Heritage Group had set up a stand portraying Corporal Cecil Newton, the veteran. Every year on or around the 3rd June Cecil had honoured his fallen comrades from Lepe Beach at the Royal Dragoon Guards memorial. Although these celebrations were low key, it was a happy period, and the beautiful weather helped the occasions.
