Using several signi cant memory boxes, Carole reminded us of some of the ways we keep memories alive and what triggers them. Using accessories such as perfume bottles and dispensers, scent/perfumes o en bring strong memories particularly of older relatives - Granny’s perfume, lavender on linen and in drawers, scents on handkerchiefs! It can remind us of highly emotional moments, sometimes hidden deep within our subconscious and sometimes shared with us day to day as we may replicate and use a scent associated with a close relative or friend. Carole drew jewellery from another box and it was quite noticeable that some of the audience looked down at their hands – wedding rings, engagement and eternity rings – worn daily but evoking strong daily memories. Some were wearing inherited jewellery, not necessarily valuable, but again igniting memories of events shared. Perhaps a story attached to a string of pearls which a mother or grandmother wore to a signi cant event in their life; the story passed down along with the pearls. Carole hoped we too would pass on jewellery with a story attached, a celebration item – value unimportant, it is the story that brings back personal history. Annual calendar events such as Christmas reignite nostalgia, remembering past get-togethers, family traditions, small gestures of kindness and support in di cult times. People lost are missed and remembered along with Christmas stockings, presents, the history of Christmas trees and handed down tree decorations. Bravely Carole showed us several past photo albums and invited us to look through them. Beach holidays, miniskirts, rst holiday abroad everything came ooding back and we all wondered aloud if this source of memories would survive in this day of technology. We take so many photos on our cameras but print o so few – what does the future hold? Finally music is another keeper of memories and we discussed a compilation LP (yes vinyl LP – a memory of its own) remembering events in our lives marked by the pop hits of the day, classic music, songs and artists. Members contributed some memories of their own relating to music. Carole as ever brought laughter to the meeting together with a lot of reminiscences between our members – we all carry memories, and over tea and scrumptious cake, past events raised to the surface and were shared (food is also a keeper of memories)! We thanked Carole and looked forward to another visit in the future. No meeting August: we will be busy entering and supporting both the New Forest and Hampshire County Show and our own village show organised by Bartley Horticultural Society – terri c fun events. 4th September: Demonstration by Sue Wall – “Reuse and Recycle ll”. See you there! For more information contact Debbie orne on: 07769 830752. Foresters Flower Club recently celebrated Sheila Shelmerdine’s 80th Birthday Carole Norman
