Many thanks are also due to Black Knowl campsite, Vibrant brewery, Fawley football and rugby clubs and Hythe cricket club who collect and donate their used cans. Further good news on the local front comes from BW ESS. In the last issue we mentioned their plans to develop a battery energy storage system at Marchwood Industrial Park. ose plans have now been put forward to the New Forest District Council in a planning application, ref no 25/10639, and can be found on their planning portal. Not so good news on a local level, although not surprising, is the introduction by Southern Water of a hosepipe ban from 21st July. is follows hard on the heels of an assessment led by the Met O ce, “State of the UK Climate 2024”, published in the International Journal of Climatology, which found that the last three years were in the hottest ve years on record in the UK. is contrasts with the analysis nding that average rainfall has increased signi cantly in October to March. More worryingly from a local perspective is the nding that the sea level around the UK is rising faster than the global average. One of the issues which has been a recurring theme in WaterCAN has been around how to reduce the use of plastics, particularly as only 10% of plastics are actually renewed. One small step which can support e orts to reduce plastics usage is to buy from the local fruit and veg stalls in Dibden Purlieu and Hythe Market. Sam Long in Dibden Purlieu currently has East Boldre strawberries in cardboard boxes, whilst Hythe Market fruit and veg stall has a range of produce in pots which can be transferred to recycled bags. One small step for man… On the same theme, Friends of the Earth have produced a guide to “Living without plastic. A plastic free home” full of fascinating facts and information. For example, a Swiss study showed that the carbon footprint of liquid soap is 25% larger than soap in a bar form, needs 5 times more energy to produce, and can use 20 times more packaging. There’s more on the website: friendso heearth.uk A positive note on a wider front: for the rst time, solar power was Europe’s biggest source of power last month. Following on from the news of French vineyard owners improving their crop by the use of solar panels comes news of a similar e ect of agrivoltaics, the integration of solar arrays into working farmland, in South Western USA. Further information in insideclimatenews.org. Don’t forget our next open meeting: “My home made better-retrofitting” at Soul Café on 29th September 7pm - 9pm. And nally a development which may be relevant for this area given the number of ats and balconies around: various European cities are making the most of their balconies with “balcony solar”, or “Balconkra werk” as the Germans call it (they do love their compound nouns!). e Department for Energy Security and Net Zero are undertaking a study to look at whether plug in systems would be safe to use in the UK. Could be a game-changer for many of us.
