Being a Fire Service veteran within the Greencoat team, I consider it an honour to proudly represent my family and friends, who supported me throughout my Retained Fire Service career, my former employer Hampshire & IOW Fire and Rescue Service and Hythe Fire Station and all its crew members over the years, where I served for 28 years and was the Officer in Charge of the station for 18 years.” Life Saving Heart Screening Day Organised and Funded by Local Lady When Sue Carter sadly lost her t and healthy son Ryan, at just 25 years of age, to sudden arrhythmia death, she was referred to the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) who o er bereavement support to families. CRY also help prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting a ected families. Wanting to help prevent other families su ering, Sue set up a memorial fund with CRY in Ryan’s name and now fundraises along with her partner Gary and son Alex to help raise money for heart screening events as well as raising awareness of cardiac risk in the young. Having already raised over £19,000, Sue was able to fund a recent screening day at Totton College where Ryan was a student governor when he was a student there. e screening which cost £10,000 took place on 26th July with a Cardiac Risk in the Young heart specialist and cardiologist. 105 youngsters between the ages of 14 and 35 were screened with ECG and Echo tests on the day. With 6 of those tested referred to hospital for ongoing investigations and a high number of letters sent to GP’s for follow ups. Some have also been asked to return next year when the next screening event will take place on 18th July 2026. Sue comments: “This event has saved lives. I am very grateful to the fundraising support I have received from Sustain Therapy, Netley Marsh Steam Rally, New Forest Tractor and Engine Club, Southampton Round Table, Longdown Activity Farm, The Saxon Inn, Totton Grill, AFC Totton, TKW Karate and friends and family.” Sue is continuing her mission to raise even more money for future screening events, her next fundraiser is on 7th September at Empire Hall in Totton, 11am–4pm, there will be cra tables, a ra e, gi s, cakes, sweets and tombola’s as well as live music from Totton Ukuleles, JenT Music, a Saxaphonist, Hinterland and Behind the Mask Band.
