Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) are running a free bus ride bonanza in Winchester on Sunday 14th September as part of the Heritage Open Days. e King Alfred Buses will be providing a range of free bus rides to the villages around the city between 10am and 5pm. In addition, FoKAB’s popular open-top double-decker bus will be running a free shuttle service between the Broadway and Hyde Street for the Hyde900 celebrations on both Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September. Free rides will be on o er from under the shadow of King Alfred’s statue in the Broadway, in the traditional way, concentrating on the country routes operated up to 1973 by King Alfred Motor Services. Buses will be going to Twyford and Colden Common, to Sparsholt, Crawley, Sutton Scotney and Stoke Charity, to East Stratton, Morn Hill and Owslebury. In addition, three very old pre-war buses will be providing shorter trips, all for free, around the city centre, and creating a most unusual chance to sample bus travel from the 1930’s. Two of these, a Leyland Lion and a 1931 Dennis 18-seater will be familiar to Winchester people, but the third is a ‘special guest’. It is a 1929 Leyland double-decker. e restoration of this bus was only recently completed and this will be its rst opportunity to provide free rides. A colourful programme, giving full details of this special Austin A30/A35 Owners Club Southampton and New Forest (but most members do not have an A30/A35) from Austin A30/A35 Owners Club Southampton and New Forest “Calm” and “Calories” is the operative word at this point of this wonderful sunny summer. e members and partners met at the Buckler’s Hard Cafe for a breakfast/bacon roll and tea, complete with wildlife and entertainment provided by wasps. en 17 meandered down to the jetty for a serene trip down and up the Beaulieu River. A grey seal popped up a couple of times to have a look around and the sun shined during the visit. Normally the club turns up to where the parking is free to enable one’s dosh to buy more nosh but convention was broken as we were all out being a tourist for the day… hence a trip into the Buckler’s Hard museum and original cottages was in order. To complete the extended morning trip a group photo on the jetty was posed for... complete with the photographer saying “back a bit, back a bit” in the hope that we would join the seal. e Club Chairman Pete arranged the entertaining visit, and made an excellent job of chaperoning the 17 strong group down to and o the boat, with no mishaps among the creaky club crew. is was followed by the Club’s evening monthly meeting’s speaker on ursday 14th August which was all of us! As it was Members night – bring your old car and then bonnet up and have a chat about the last time you did not nd any rust. e next evening meetup is 11th September, complete with a sh and chip supper... note the nosh and calorie theme, not bad for a car club. Normal venue for the evening 7.15pm for 7.30pm, 2nd Thursday of the month at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Road, Netley Marsh, SO40 7GE. For more information email: austin-club@outlook.com, or search for sccs New Forest on Facebook. If you wish to visit club night, please make yourself known to Pete the Chairman, and bring a mug! event, will be available on the day at £6 from the Sales Stand situated at e Broadway. Sales of these programmes go towards the costs of conserving and operating the eet of Vintage buses and coaches. “As a not-for-profit registered Charity, every single penny of donations goes straight to the maintenance of our Fleet” says FoKAB Chairman James Freeman. ey are appealing for funds North Walls (Stephen Bigley) Copyright Richard Nardi
