Dave Dibden gave a fascinating talk on the art of coppicing, having revived its practice at Pondhead Inclosure near Lyndhurst. Dave explained how a range of trees respond to coppicing i.e. cutting back nearly to ground level – by sprouting multiple stems. Sections of woodland are cut on a rotation of 7 to 10 years to produce a continuous crop of sizeable timber or poles and results in a broad range of woodland habitats that bene t wildlife – a win-win arrangement. Members were fascinated by the subtle variation in common tools to cut and clean up timber and asked lots of questions. Dave also demonstrated some coppice cra s, including a safe and easy way to strip bark and make ‘gypsy’ owers with elder wood. All in all a truly fascinating evening. Such was the interest that the club is now arranging a walk with Dave around Pondhead to see the e ects of coppicing rotations for themselves. A er that, club members are looking forward to the December social when the results of this year’s Woodblock Challenge will be displayed and voted on. Meanwhile, members are busy working on a very wide range of projects, from leaf shaped bowls to name plates, birds to abstract shapes, spoons to reliefs. The club meets at Noadswood School on alternate Thursday evenings from 6.30pm -8.30pm. New members are welcome, whether experienced in woodwork or not but must be 16 years or over.
