With a choice of 5 di erent walks (25½ miles, 16 miles, 11 miles, 8 miles and 5 miles) it attracts a huge range of walkers and this year 545 people took part for over 89 charities. Four members of Hythe and Waterside Rotary took part. Les Sharpe and Jean and Charlie Adams undertook the 11 mile walk which they covered in 4½hours and raised just over £800 for Hythe & Waterside Rotary. John Samuels walked the 5 mile stretch and raised £175 for Global Sight Solutions. Despite a wet start the drizzle stopped once the coach reached the drop o point and the weather got better and better as the day went on. e walk ended at the Memorial Park in Romsey with a carnival atmosphere, with walkers being cheered with music playing in the background. Medals were presented by the President of Romsey Test Rotary and local Mayors. A great day was had by all, and the Rotary Club of Romsey Test should be applauded for holding such a well organised event. Jean Adams, Les Sharpe and Charlie Adams receiving their medals John Samuels receiving his medal STUFF ABOUT BIRDS Friends of the late Clive Denby (1948 to 2022), an eminent Hampshire ornithologist, have had his nal book published and they think he would be delighted with ‘Stu About Birds’. When the University of Southampton graduate passed away in 2022 he had been writing an important avian manuscript but had not had chance to put it in front of a publisher. Clive, who had worked for the RSPB and lived in Hampshire and Africa, had also organised expeditions to India and the subsequent sponsorship that was required. One of these trips was named the University of Southampton Ornithological Project. Consequently, Clive had lots of fascinating tales to tell and important research to share relating to birds. He writes that his intention for Stu About Birds is not just for it to be “sciency but also anecdotal”. It “will not just inform but, hopefully, entertain”. His friend John Cockaday, who approached Tim Saunders to see whether it was suitable for publication, says: “John had been working on the manuscript for some time and but for the Covid epidemic, with consequential disruption to normal life, it might well have been published in 2020.” Tim Saunders adds: “I had not ventured into publishing wildlife books until John approached me and Clive’s passionate and humorous writing style resulted in me taking on the manuscript. In the course of reading and editing I have learned a huge amount about this fascinating subject matter and am proud to be able to make it available for bird lovers around the world.” Now Clive’s book, Stu About Birds, illustrated by Heather-Anne Everett, is available in all good bookshops and online.
