October’s meeting had 2 workstations and a quiz - a truly lovely, fun, creative and relaxing sociable evening. Marion and Lesley, June and Mary ran workstations with foam free designs for us to try. Everything except scissors was provided. June and Mary’s workstation was to create a Tussie Mussie, a small hand tied bunch of owers, dating back to the middle ages, otherwise known as a nosegay. Classically very small and consisting of fragrant owers and herbs, they were held to the face to ward o unpleasant smells and disease. Moss was used to retain water and was wrapped around the stems to keep owers and herbs fresh. e Victorians use them with owers of speci c meaning to convey messages and this continues today at weddings and special occasions. We had a selection of scented spray roses or spray carnations, with rosemary, bay, lavender etc. A minimal fresh owers. e owers were kept fresh in stemmed orchid tubes. e mechanics were cat scratch pads with hessian or green ribbon pinned around. We could select dried material in natural, brown or shades of orange: grass, seed heads-single/ multiple, owers e.g. status, pumpkins on stems etc. Stems were poked into the scratch pad and arranged with a classic meadow design and space le between the di erent heights, textures, shades etc. “Leaving space for the butter ies” or “less is more” are the important considerations when making these designs. Very attractive, e ective dry displays were created. Especially appropriate for the time of year and a er the beautiful summer we have had. Whilst we had refreshments, Marion did a quiz, which was great fun and exercised our brain cells whilst enjoying a cuppa and biscuits. Many thanks to our kitchen fairies! en came the ra e- beautifully displayed with fantastic prizes, organised by Lin. I won a 1000 piece puzzle called “A Quiet Evening” particularly apt considering I have a 12 week old puppy! A circle of cloth, lace or doily was used to wrap around the outside and tied with a ribbon to make the posy look attractive. What pretty, dainty gi s these would make for someone!
