Continued from page 72 Friends of King Alfred Buses Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) collect, restore and preserve buses and coaches that were once in the eet of Winchester’s independent familyowned local bus service, King Alfred Motor Services, which existed from 1915 – 1973, each proudly carrying the statue of King Alfred on their anks. Since 1981 they have collected every single surviving vehicle from the King Alfred eet – 16 single and doubledeckers preserved for future generations. Every year the buses are used to give free rides from Winchester Broadway on New Year’s Day, the rst bank holiday in May and the national Heritage Open Days in September. FoKAB is entirely volunteer run and exist purely on donations; they need to raise £75,000 a year to cover their standing costs including accommodation for the eet, maintenance and insurance. At the moment FoKAB are trying to raise £500,000 to restore their very special, unique 1950 Leyland Olympic which was the rst under oor-engined bus in Hampshire, which was very badly damaged in a re at the end of 2023. LYNTON AND BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS) and Mid Hants Railway, Solent Branch meetings are held in association with Mid Hants Railway – Southampton and Waterside Group. Meetings are held at Junction Church (formerly Eastleigh Railway Institute), 2 Romsey Road Eastleigh SO50 9FE and commence at 7.30pm. e room, on the rst oor (sorry no disabled access), is usually open from 7pm.
