Waterside Art Group recently hosted a successful painting demonstration by Stewart Beckett, who is an Associate of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Stewart’s painting style is quite di erent from that of many of the Art Group’s members – and this was part of the appeal in his demo. When working in oils, Stewart likes to explore light, texture and form, and to capture emotions that a place might evoke. On the practical side, he showed di erent ways to apply paint to the canvas, o en using unconventional tools, and explained the colours he was mixing and the brushes he used. He also described how he thinks about light, shapes and balance in an image, and – importantly – painting in an intuitive way. Re ecting on the evening’s success, Mary, a long-time member of the Group, said: “I like to see how other artists work, and Stewart’s demonstration at Waterside Art Group has given me confidence to try something new.” She continued: “At our weekly painting sessions we don’t have formal lessons, so you can come along and just ‘give it a go’, exploring your own style with no one to judge.” e Group is an informal gathering providing a relaxed and supportive environment for anyone – whether they’re happy in their comfort zone or want to try stepping outside it! Waterside Art Group meets on Tuesday evenings, 7pm to 9pm, at Hythe and Dibden Community Centre in Brinton Lane, o Jones Lane, Hythe SO45 6DU.
