Rather than leaving your holiday snaps to languish on the phone or in an album, Waterside Art Group suggests using them as a starting point for creativity. At any skill level, you will probably have more of a connection with your own photos than with a reference image found online. You might recall the warmth of that sunset, the energy of those busy streets, the calm of a quiet landscape, the pattern of unusual roo ops, or maybe an emotion prompted by a memorable scene. “It isn’t essential to stick to the realism of photos,” says Mary, a member of Waterside Art Group. “You can ‘loosen up’ and explore different styles, maybe focus on a shape, a pattern, a colour or combination of colours, for instance.” Of course, inspiration need not depend on how far you travel. A lovely a ernoon at a local beach, views of a friend’s garden, a day trip to a historic site... Images from these can be just as rich in artistic potential as any faraway destination. So, when you go on holiday or you’re out and about, perhaps start thinking about your next creative idea to share at Waterside Art Group. Waterside Art Group meets on Tuesday evenings, 7pm - 9pm, at Hythe and Dibden Community Centre in Brinton Lane, o Jones Lane, Hythe SO45 6DU. Membership costs just £65 a year, which gives members the chance to attend weekly meetings and to show and sell their artwork at the summer exhibition. Or, for those not wanting to commit to a whole year, they can attend occasional meetings as a non-member for £5 a session (but they won’t have the option to enter the exhibition). Why not go along on a Tuesday evening for a free “taster” session?
