New Forest Aquaponics CIC has been running since 2018, sta ed solely by volunteers. Focused on reducing the environmental impact of food production, aquaponics is a sustainable food-growing system that combines aquaculture (raising sh) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). In this closed-loop system, the sh waste fertilises the plants, and the plants help purify the sh water, reducing water use, resource waste, and environmental impact. anks to the National Lottery funding, the project is now ready to ful l a long-term ambition to educate and inspire people about aquaponics, from their site in Boldre, in the heart of the New Forest. The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, will see hands on workshops, community events, and an accessible education programme - both on-site and online - that raises awareness of aquaponics as an environmentally friendly method of food production. At the same time, the group will be able to press on with plans to complete a move from their original site and increase opportunities for local people, schools and groups to visit, volunteer and learn about aquaponics. Lucie Mann, founder of New Forest Aquaponics CIC, says: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our plans to develop a centre of excellence, encouraging people to consider Aquaponics as a sustainable alternative for food production. It opens the doors for people to understand more about Aquaponics and make informed choices on how they want food to be grown.
